Heatwave kills one more in Haryana

Chandigarh, June 6
Sizzling heatwave conditions were revived again today in the entire north-west region after a day’s respite, which claimed the life of a 40-year-old woman in Mandi Adampur of Hisar district, taking the toll to four each in Haryana and Punjab since last Monday.

Amritsar, again turned hottest today with the mercury soaring to 46.2°C, five degrees above normal to make it the hottest place in the region.

Hisar, bordering Rajasthan, remained plunged into darkness for hours following a high-velocity dust storm last night, while the people groaned under 34.4°C, minimum temperature. The day temperature today shot up to 43.7°C, four degrees above normal. Three days ago, the mercury had shot up to 47.9°C, six degrees above normal in Hisar.

The Weather Bureau here said Rohtak and surrounding areas in Haryana reported traces of rains. But strong dust-raising winds swept away the clouds. Ambala reported a high of 43.7°C, three degrees above normal.

The maximum in and around Chandigarh today rose to 42.6°C, three degrees above normal.

Ludhiana at 44.9°C and Patiala at 44.3°C also faced blistering heat, both reporting three degrees above normal temperatures.

Shimla also turned hotter with the mercury soaring by five degrees above normal to 29.4°C. Five degrees above normal temperature were also reported from Sundar Nagar and Bhuntar as the mercury soared there to 39.7°C and 37.6°C, respectively.

Srinagar, turned hot by three degrees at 31.5°C and Jammu sizzled at 44°C.

Delhi too was subjected to sizzling hot weather with the maximum rising to 43.1°C at Safdarjung and 44°C at Palam.

Weather forecasters predict no let-up in the ongoing heatwave and have forecast dust and thunder storms in the plains of the region and isolated rains or thundershowers in Himachal Pradesh and Jammu and Kashmir. UNI
