Brar loses whip

New Delhi, May 9
Taking a serious view of two Congress MPs, Mr Jagmeet Singh Brar and Mr Laxman Singh, asking questions from Defence Minister George Fernandes despite his continuing boycott by the party in the Lok Sabha, the Congress has served show-cause notices to the MPs and relieved Mr Brar of his position as a whip of the party.

Congress spokesman S. Jaipal Reddy said, “Mr Brar had given a letter making amends for his yesterday’s action in the Lok Sabha”.

Show-cause notices had been given to both MPs. However, the party would take into consideration the letter addressed by Mr Brar.

Asked why disciplinary action was taken against Mr Brar even after he had tendered an apology, Mr Reddy said Mr Brar as a whip was supposed to convey the commands of the party to the Congress MPs, but he himself flouted the party’s stand on continuing the boycott of Mr Fernandes in protest against his reinduction into the Cabinet without his being exonerated by the Tehelka Commission.
