SC to hear suit on SYL today

New Delhi, May 4
The Punjab Government’s suit seeking to discharge the state from the obligation of constructing the controversial Sutlej Yamuna Link (SYL) canal in its territory, as mandated by the Supreme Court, will be taken up for hearing by it on tomorrow.

The apex court had on January 15, 2002, passed a decree against Punjab on a suit by Haryana, directing the former to complete the SYL project in its territory by January 15 this year.

The government, had moved the apex court on January 13, seeking to declare the order passed by it as “not binding” on the state as arrangements for construction “was not enforceable under the changed circumstances.”
