India remains China cautious
Tribune News Service

New Delhi, May 2
Despite Defence Minister George Fernandes' claim that his recent visit to China was "very good" and great interest was being generated about the forthcoming visit of Prime Minister Atal Behari Vajpayee to the northern neighbour, New Delhi continues to be cautious of Beijing.

India's cautious approach became evident during Mr Fernandes’ interaction with the media today on his visit to China, when he was asked whether after his visit there was a movement in perception in the Ministry of Defence that in future India had threat only on one of its borders, the Defence Minister said, "one such visit is not enough to answer all such questions".

His statement clearly reflected that despite all efforts to improve the relations between the two neighbours and great expectations put on Mr Vajpayee's visit, India was not letting its guard down on borders with China.

Besides, the Defence Minister avoided giving direct answers to what exactly was discussed during his seven-day visit. He just said that no specifics were discussed and the thrust was on resolving all issues that exist.
