Sehwag boosts Delhi’s hopes
M.S. Unnikrishnan

New Delhi, April 28
Virender Sehwag exploded into his wonted batting pyrotechniques to raise visions of a victory for Delhi as the hosts made 175 for five, chasing a victory target of 333 set by Tamil Nadu, in the semifinal match of the Ranji Trophy Cricket Championship at the end of the fourth day at the Ferozeshah Kotla ground here today.

Delhi need another 174 runs off 90 overs to win the match tomorrow, and with Sehwag in full flow, this looks like a reachable target, and if they realise their dream of a victory, it will be a remarkable turnaround, as they had been at the receiving end on the first two days of the match.

Sehwag was unbeaten on 98, which came off just 108 balls, studded with 19 boundaries and one six, and N.S. Negi was not out on 2 at close of play.

Sehwag walked in with Delhi tottering at one for 12. Opener Gautam Gambhir once again failed to click when he offered a simple catch to substitute Badrinath at square leg, off L. Balaji. Sehwag’s responsibility became heavier when Akash Chopra also got out cheaply, caught by Hemang Badani off Balaji for 12. Balaji bowled with fire to unsettle Delhi who were now two wickets down for 22 runs. And four runs later, Mithun Manhas was also back in the pavilion, when he became the third victim of Balaji. Manhas was forced to snick one into the gloves of wicket-keeper P. Raju. Three down for 26 runs, Delhi were in a desperate situation.

But Sehwag got into his attacking blitzkrieg to put the Tamil Nadu bowling to the sword. It was Sehwag all the way as the Tamil Nadu bowlers split their hair in desperation, not to known how to contain him.

Sehwag launched himself into his firing mode by blasting medium pacer M.R. Srinivas into the mid-wicket boundary. And then flowed a torrent of fours, with Srinivas, Balaji, captain Suresh and spinner Dhandapani all getting Sehwag’s stick. Suresh was hit for three consecutive boundaries — to the point and mid-wicket region — in his very first over, which was the 15th of the Delhi’s second innings.

Dhandapani was caned for four boundaries in his ninth over and the bowler was hit for a six and a four in the 28th over, which yielded 16 runs, but Sehwag was also lucky to escape unscathed as one ball just landed inches in front of Badani. But it was a minor blemish compared to the devastating batting form Sehwag displayed, sparing no Tamil Nadu bowler.

When Sehwag was in full flow, Delhi lost Varun Kumar and Vijay Dahiya also cheaply. Varun Kumar and Sehwag added 70 runs to take Delhi out of the hole in which they had found themselves in after losing three wickets cheaply.

In the morning, Tamil Nadu, who resumed at 88 for four, were all out for 261, and their 71-run first innings lead helped them give a challenging total of 333 for Delhi to chase. Sadagopan Ramesh and S. Sharath, who were on 20 and five runs respectively, when stumps were drawn on Sunday evening, stayed put to add 81 runs. Ramesh, who made 82 in the first innings, scored 55 while Sharath remained unbeaten on 75. V. Sarvanan pitched in with 34, but the other batsmen got out cheaply to restrict Tamil Nadu’s second innings total to a moderate level. Negi was the most successful bowler for Delhi, scalping three wickets for 41 runs in 12 overs.

Colombo Test heads for a draw

Colombo, April 28
The first cricket Test between Sri Lanka and New Zealand was set for a draw after rain halted play in the post-lunch session of the fourth day’s play here today.

Sri Lanka, replying to New Zealand’s first innings total of 515 for 7 declared, were 424 for 6 when a thunderstorm drove the players back to the pavilion 45 minutes before tea.

Australian umpires Daryl Harper and Simon Taufel waited till after the tea break for the weather to clear before abandoning play for the day. Sri Lanka’s new captain Hashan Tillakaratne, responding to his counterpart Stephen Fleming’s epic 274 with a dour century of his own, was unbeaten on 126 after a marathon seven-hour stay at the crease.

Kumar Dharmasena was on 19, having put on 50 for the unbroken seventh wicket on the placid wicket that afforded no assistance to the bowlers after the first day.

The rain brought relief to the players who had struggled for three-and-a-half days in oppressive heat and humid conditions and some 1,200 bored spectators who had watched the bat dominate the ball from the start.

With a result unlikely on the fifth day, the focus has already shifted to the second and final Test of the short series starting in the hill resort of Kandy on Saturday.

Recalled wicket-keeper Romesh Kaluwitharana lit up the fourth morning with a quickfire 76 after Sri Lanka resumed at the overnight score of 267 for 4.

Kaluwitharana and Tillakaratne put on 107 for the sixth wicket — the captain contributing just 26 — after Mahela Jayawardena was dismissed off the fourth ball of the morning.

Jayawardena, who hit 58 yesterday to return to form after a disastrous World Cup last month, was caught behind off Jacob Oram without adding to his score.

The 33-year-old Kaluwitharana, playing his first Test in two years, justified his selection by tearing into the Kiwi attack with 13 hits to the fence.

The aggressive batsman, a surprise exclusion for the World Cup, relieved the pressure by smashing Oram and Shane Bond for two boundaries each.

He then welcomed Scott Styris into the attack with two cut shots that raced to the point fence and brought up his half-century by driving the same bowler for his 10th boundary.

Vengsarkar in poll fray
R. Mohan

Dilip Vengsarkar will be running for vice-president at the Mumbai Cricket Association (MCA). He puts himself in the election fray which is the only way open to getting into the game’s administration. Vengsarkar, the stylish batsman who stood straight as a grenadier guard in his salad days in the middle order, takes the game seriously. He is not one of those inclined to raking in media money while rendering lip service to the cause of Indian cricket.

The Mumbai batsman has spent years building a successful academy in his home town and the organisation is just bearing fruit.

Maybe, Vengsarkar is one of those former cricketers the BCCI should have roped in for furthering the quality of Indian cricket. Because of his own inhibitions in his playing days when he did not go out of the way to seek an image beyond the batting crease, he is no media darling. That can be seen as the only weakness hampering him now.

By no means is Vengsarkar the first ex-cricketer to wish to try his hand at administration. The Hyderabad off spinner Ghulam Ahmed went on to be a popular and efficient secretary of the board. Ghulam was the cricketer who went the farthest when it comes to cricket administration.

Other Test cricketers have become secretaries of their state association. A trend set by Bishen Bedi in Delhi and Venkataragahavan in Chennai has taken root with at least three prominent former cricketers occupying the key post of secretary in their state associations. Brijesh Patel doubles up also as the chairman of national selectors. And there are already murmurs that secretaries of state associations will be barred from election as national selectors since some kind of conflict of interest is seen in such dual status.

Crossing over into seats in the administration has not been impossibly demanding though it would be fair to say cricketers have had to make the same kind of compromises that administrators have always had to endorse to strike the balance between finding cash for a cricket structure and vested club interests. National Football League: Salgaocar SC finish second

Margao, April 28
Champions East Bengal failed to give finishing touches to their supremacy as Salgaocar, who scored a goal in each half, registered a convincing 2-0 win to finish second at the end of the 7th edition of the National Football League at the Nehru Stadium here today.

Needing victory to finish second, Salgaocar dominated the game throughout with short crisp passes and scored through man of the match Jatin Singh Bist (21st) and Sunday Seah (54th).

With this win, Salgaocar with 44 points from 22 matches finished second behind East Bengal, who emerged champions with 49 points.

Vasco, who beat Mahindras 2-1, finished third with 43 points to collect a cash prize of Rs 16 lakhs.

The fairplay award went to JCT.

Churchill Bros’ striker Yusif Yakubu with 21 goals emerged as the highest scorer for the second consecutive year surpassing his last year score of 18 goals.

East Bengal who received the winner’s trophy, became richer by Rs 40 lakh, while Salgaocar got Rs 20 lakh and the runners-up trophy.

HAL shock Bagan

KOLKATA: Mohun Bagan finished a nightmarish National Football League (NFL) in perfect discord, losing 0-1 to HAL, which had already been relegated from the league at the Salt Lake stadium here today.

Bagan remained on 32 points, while HAL finished off with 11.

The goal came in the 23rd minute of the second half when Sunil Kumar rose above the defenders to send a sharp shooter off a head, which bulged the back of the net (1-0).

This apart, HAL created a couple of other opportunities during the second half through Xavier and Sunil Kumar, who missed sitters. As for Bagan, they hardly looked a team, which won the NFL last year.

There was no coordination in the midfield and the attack looked listless with the absence of Barreto, who has gone home and Baichung Bhutia, who had already earned two yellows.

Sunil Chettri and Amar Ganguli created a couple of chances early in the match, but they faded away with time as HAL increased the tempo.

Vasco beat Mahindras

MUMBAI: Needing a win to enhance their chances of a runner-up finish, Vasco, Goa, overcame Mahindra United, Mumbai, 2-1 in an exciting concluding fixture in the seventh National Football League here today.

Following a scoreless first half, Vasco broke the deadlock in the 53rd minute when Minino Fernandes scored off a Shamsy Raza free-kick.

But Mahindra came right back into the match when defender Oderty Lawson tapped home the equaliser in the next minute.

The two goals in quick succession set the tone for an exciting second half and Agnelo Gomes netted the match-winner in the 81st minute.

The win took Vasco’s tally to 43 points from 22 matches.

Churchill drub ITI

BANGALORE: Ghanian striker Yusuf Yakubu scored three goals, as Churchill Brothers whipped Indian Telephone Industries 5-1 in the National Football League here today.

Yakubu, who led the NFL goal-scorer’s list last year, scored in the 16th, 20th and 81st minutes, as the Goan side asserted their supremacy and piled on the agony on the telephonemen, who have already been demoted from the 12-team NFL.

The mercurial foreign recruit has taken his goals tally this year to 21 as curtains came down on the seventh edition.

Yakubu first scored off a solo effort and four minutes later made it 2-0 off a deft pass from Benjamin Ansah.

After the break, ITI, who finished their league engagements tallying just eight points, pulled one back as substitute Dipankar Chatterjee found the target after his initial shot popped out from the hands of ‘keeper Edward Ansah in the 56th minute.

But Churchill Brothers, who collected three points from this encounter taking their overall points tally to 37, immediately made it 3-1, as substitute Tiken Singh came out with an accurate header off a free kick taken by Noel Wilson in the very next minute.

Roque Barreto scored in the 78th minute off a Yakubu pass and the latter completed the rout off a solo effort three minutes later.

ITI was expected to put up a better show after holding Mohun Bagan 3-3 in their last encounter at the Salt Lake Stadium at Kolkata but that was not to be.

JCT win, finish 4th

CHENNAI: Former champions JCT, Phagwara, came from behind to score a 3-1 win over Indian Bank to finish at fourth spot in the National Football League that ended in five different venues in the country today.

Like in their earlier six matches, Indian Bank were found wanting as they wilted under pressure in the last 10 minutes of the game.

Substitute Chanrajit Kumar, man of the match, scored twice to give JCT the win. Kasun Jayasuriya put Indian Bank in the lead but I M Vijayan found parity in the next minute.

Making good use of defence lapses, Charanjit came up with two opportunistic goals in the 80th and 81st minutes.

JCT, who went into the match with 35 points finished behind East Bengal, Salgaocar and Vasco in the order of merit and collected Rs 9 lakh for finishing fourth.

Indian Bank finished at the tenth spot and retained their place in the league for the next season, ahead of ITI and Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (both from Bangalore), who were relegated to the second division of the league.

As for today’s match between JCT and Indian Bank the rivals were equal to the task in their probings in the barren first half. The match was mostly confined to mid field, though JCT’s Jaswinder Singh and Ram Pal in particular created furore at the bank goal, where Felix Edward was at his best in denying at least four chances.

Dempo beat Tollygunge

KOLKATA: empo Sports Club, Goa, overcame a strong challenge from Tollygunge Agragami to prevail 3-2 in a seventh National Football League encounter here yesterday.

Clifford Miranda, E B Chenna and Stanley Colaco found the target for the winners who finished their engagements with 35 points from 22 matches.

For the locals, Niladri Chakraborty and Asim Biswas were the scorers in the slow and listless Salt Lake stadium match.

Despite missing nine of their first eleven players due to office engagements or injury, Tollygunge dominated the opening session. PTI

Indian Oil derail WR

Mumbai, April 28
Local outfit Indian Oil, playing without their star forward Deepak Thakur, managed to derail Western Railway 2-1 in the second leg semifinal of the 41st Bombay Gold Cup hockey tournament at the Mahindra Stadium here today. Indian Oil had won the first leg semi-final with a solitary goal on Friday.

The teams were level at half time. It was Indian Oil who took the lead when their forward Mohammed Nawaz scored a field goal in the seventh minute of the match.

With just three minutes to go for the lemon time, Western Railway equalised when Ingo Singh scored off K S B Shanta Kumar pass.

Though both the teams fought tooth and nail for the match winner, it was only in the 65th minute that Indian Oil managed to score when their forward Hamza Mujtaba scored off Mohammed Nawas pass after the Western Railway were reduced to 10 players as their defender Sunil Kumar was suspended in the 65th minute for rough play.

Indian Oil’s Viren Rasquinha was also shown the yellow card for rough play in the 48th minute while their custodian Devesh Chauhan, defenders Bikramjeet Singh and Sunil Yadav and forward Nitin Kumar were cautioned with green cards. Indian Oil forced just two penalty corners while the Western Railway got four with neither being successful in converting any of them.

Star-studded Indian Airlines, Delhi crushed a hapless Karnataka 6-1, after leading 3-1 at the breather in the second semifinal.

Indian Airlines had beaten Karnataka 4-2 in the first leg semifinals on Saturday. Indian skipper Dhanraj Pillay scored a brace in his team’s big win. He drew first blood in the fourth minute with a field goal. Nine minutes later IA defender and another international Dilip Tirkey converted the second penalty corner to increase the lead.

Karnataka pulled one back in the 25th minute when their forward Birender Lakra scored off skipper Rama Rao pass. With a minute to go for half time, Arjun Halappa converted third penalty corner to make it 3-1 in favour of the Delhi outfit.

Four minutes from half time, Prabodh Tirkey converted the fourth penalty corner to make it 4-1 and another international Sameer Dad made it 5-1. PTI

Agassi rallies to down Roddick

Houston, April 28
Andre Agassi celebrated his new status as world No 1 by coming from behind to beat Andy Roddick 3-6, 6-3, 6-4 in the US Clay Court Championships final. Agassi, the top seed, trailed by a set and a break but rallied to win his fourth title of 2003 and 58th of his career yesterday, moving him above Romanian Ilie Nastase to number seven on the all-time list.

It was also his fourth career win in as many matches against fellow American Roddick, who was the two-time defending champion in this event.

Agassi, who will be 33 tomorrow, moved to the top of the rankings by crushing Austrian Jurgen Melzer on Saturday, but the 20-year-old Roddick started the final well. Roddick, the second seed, was a lifetime 16-0 at the Westside Tennis Club and was impressive in winning the first set. The youngster then broke in the first game of the second set and held for a 2-0 lead. But his older opponent went on a run, winning five of the next six games to take over the momentum.

Agassi broke in the fifth game of the final set and never looked back, going on to complete his 23rd victory in 24 matches this year. Reuters

Fred Couples’ wait ends

Humble, Texas, April 28
Fred Couples won his first PGA tournament in nearly five years with a four-shot victory in the Houston Open yesterday. Couples who earned $ 810,000 for his 15th career title, closed with four birdies over the last five holes to complete a round of 67 and a 21-under-par total of 267.

Mark Calcavecchia, Hank Kuehne and Australia’s Stuart Appleby tied for second on 271, with Jay Haas fifth on 272, a stroke ahead of Jeff Maggert.

“I feel honoured to win again,” Couples said. “I played a very, very good round of golf.

“Someone asked me if I watched the leaderboard. I watched it all day, and it went up and it went down and then it went up again, then Calc went crazy, then Kuehne went nuts, then Appleby.

“It was a lot of fun to be a part of it. Just to finish strong and make some birdies and get a big cushion was a nice feeling.”

The 43-year-old Couples began the final round with a one-shot lead over Calcavecchia.

After both players finished the front nine with four birdies and a double-bogey each Couples still held a tenuous one-stroke margin.

He promptly dropped into a tie with Calcavecchia after bogeying the 10th. Then Calcavecchia, the 1989 British Open champion, seized the lead at 18-under with a birdie on the 12th.

Meanwhile, Appleby started making his move. After making birdie on four of five holes beginning at the 11th, the Australian, whose last PGA Tour victory came in this event in 1999, took the lead.

After putting his tee shot in the rough on the 16th, Appleby bogeyed while Couples and Calcavecchia each birdied the 15th.

Kuehne, the second-round co-leader, birdied three straight holes from the 15th to take a one-shot lead. Reuters

Even as the Sports Authority of Andhra Pradesh denied charges of encouraging doping to win medals for the state, Andhra Pradesh Amateur Wrestling Association Chairman Kandi Gangadhara Rao on Monday defended beleaguered athlete Uday Laxmi, who had made the startling allegation after the AAFI cracked the whip to curb the menace. “There is 100 per cent truth in Uday Laxmi’s statement that the sportspersons in the state were asked to take performance-enhancing drugs to come on top,” Mr Rao told reporters here. It was “improper to disown” Uday Laxmi, who had won two gold medals in the recent national games in 400 m hurdles and 4x400 relay and other athletes when caught, he opined. UNI

His departure leaves England coach Duncan Fletcher with the task of finding a suitable replacement for the man described as “a fantastic servant” to the one-day game by chairman of selectors David Graveney. On hearing the news Graveney said: “It was a surprise, certainly, and I think Duncan would feel the same way.” Knight said he had been mulling over retirement for some time. AFP
