New Delhi, April 10
A gigantic $ 180-billion plan for the reconstruction of post-war Iraq is being mooted by the international community and India is expected to get business worth more than 10 billion dollars, diplomatic sources said today.

Mr R.M. Abhyankar, Secretary in the Ministry of External Affairs, is expected to leave for Washington and New York soon to have discussions on the reconstruction of Iraq. Mr Abhyankar would be putting forth before the international community the Indian point of view in the reconstruction process and apprise the participants of various areas of expertise of Indian companies.

Meanwhile, Mr Khalid Al-Razni, a senior diplomat in the Kuwaiti embassy here, told The Tribune today that the Indian companies would be getting business worth more than $ 10 billion once Iraq’s reconstruction began.

Mr Khalid said Indian companies dealing in tea, rice, oil, gas, infrastructure and information technology would be required in a big way for the reconstruction of Iraq.

Well-placed sources in the Ministry of External Affairs said Kuwaiti and American officials in Kuwait had asked the Indian embassy in Kuwait some 10 days back for a list of Indian companies which have experience of doing business in the Gulf region and which can execute large orders.
