3 of family shot in Kashmir

Four persons, including three members of a single family, were killed in separate incidents in the Kashmir valley since last night. Partial damage was caused due to a mine blast to the Town Hall building at Pampore in Pulwama district, while an IED explosion took place on the Sogam-Kokernag road in Anantnag district.

Three members of a family were shot dead when unidentified militants intruded into the house of Mohammad Yusuf Sheikh at Vilgam, Handwara, Kupwara district, last night.

The police said the house owner, his wife, Rafiqa, and minor daughter, Bisma, died on the spot when unidentified militants fired indiscriminately on them.

The police recovered the body of Ghulam Mohammad Najar in the Awantipora area of Pulwama district this morning.

JAMMU: An army non-commissioned officer was killed and three jawans injured when militants attacked an Army patrol party in Poonch district on Thursday, official sources said.

The patrol party was moving towards a militant hideout in the Radhahardi forest area of the district when ultras, taking position on mountain peaks, resorted to heavy firing and burst grenades at around 1 p.m., the sources said.

In the attack, the non-commissioned officer was killed and three jawans injured, the sources said, adding that additional troops were sent to the area and a major combing operation was underway.

A self-styled district commander of the Hizbul Mujahideen was shot dead by security forces in a fierce encounter in the Phagla area of Surankote sector of Poonch district late on Wednesday, official sources said.

Acting on a tip-off that Barkat Ali was hiding in the Phagla area, security forces launched an operation to flush him out.

In the ensuing gunbattle, Ali was shot dead. One Kalashnikov rifle and some ammunition were seized.

In another encounter in the Hari Budha area in Mandi sector of Poonch district, security forces gunned down two ultras in a gunbattle.
