Basra, Nasiriyah fall to allies
Baghdad in flames * Thousands surrender

Baghdad, March 22
US-led troops moved in on the key southern Iraqi city of Basra today, taking thousands prisoner in a major escalation of the war to topple Saddam Hussein, as Baghdad was hit by fresh air strikes.

US strike kills 45
Halabja (Iraq), March 22
The US missile strikes against Islamists in northern Iraq early today had also hit the base of a mainstream Islamic party, killing at least 45 persons, Kurdish officials and fleeing locals told the AFP.

Urban warfare biggest test  for allies

Even as American and British tanks today continued to roll down the road to Baghdad and were just about 250 km away from the Iraqi capital, President Saddam Hussein has several aces up his sleeve and has the potential of turning the tables on President George Bush.

Consensus eludes all-party meeting
New Delhi, March 22
A consensus on adopting a joint resolution on the US attack on Iraq could not be evolved here today at an all-party meeting convened by Prime Minister Atal Behari Vajpayee.

The President, Dr A.P.J. Abdul Kalam, wants to meet the old man to have a first-hand information about the massacre of hundreds of innocent Indians at the hands of General Dyer on Baisakhi of 1919 during his first proposed visit here tomorrow.
