BSNL slashes STD rates

The BSNL today opened up another front for competition by slashing STD rates by as much as 47 per cent for distances beyond 500 km, for calls made from fixed lines to fixed lines.

Under the revised tariff structure, which will come into force from March 7, consumers will be charged at the rate of Rs 4.80 per minute for distances beyond 500 km and will have one rate throughout the day. This is 47 per cent less than the existing rate of Rs 9 per minute.

For the distances between 200 km and 500 km, the tariff will remain unchanged and the consumers will be charged at the rate of Rs 4.80 per minute during peak period and Rs 2.40 per minute during the off-peak period. For the other two distance slabs, between 50 km and 200 km and less than 50 km, the existing tariffs will apply.

“The BSNL, by virtue of its huge infrastructure, is in a position to offer the best rates, better than any competitor”, a statement issued by the BSNL said.

“The BSNL customers may be offered a next generation customer premise equipment, will ensure that voice services and broad-band services are simultaneously multiplexed,” it said.
