University makes giant strides
MR R.S. Chaudhry, Vice-Chancellor of Kurukshetra University, whose three-year term ends on April 5, 2003, has left an indelible impression on various facets of university life. He is the only Vice-Chancellor who has undertaken and got completed construction work and projects worth over Rs 20 crore during his tenure. His singular contribution of the expansion of the university in the field of academics, sports, introduction of new courses and construction work is unparalleled. Kurukshetra University has seen scholar Vice-Chancellors like Dr A.C. Joshi, Mr Suraj Bhan, Dr Vikas Mishra, Dr Ganpati Chander Gupt, Dr Bhim Singh Dahiya and Mr M.L. Ranga. Among the top administrators who worked as Vice-Chancellor were Dr S.K. Dutta, Lt-Gen Balaram and Mr K.K. Sharma. The main contribution by Mr Chaudhry has been the revision of courses of B.Tech classes at Regional Engineering College, Kurukshetra. Interestingly, the revision of courses in the college had not been done since 1972. Mr Chaudhry got the courses revised to make these compatible with the market needs, the syllabi of the All-India Council of Technical Education (AICTE) and other leading engineering institutes of the country. It was a Herculean task which was completed by Mr Chaudhry in record time. Likewise, the syllabi of all courses run by the university was updated as per the instructions and requirements of the UGC. The Department of Distance Education progressed by leaps and bounds during his tenure. In 1999-2000, when Mr Chaudhry took over, the number of courses being run by Distance Education were 39 and the student strength 24,000. Now the number of courses has risen to 57 with a student strength of nearly 34,000. Likewise, the income as well as expenditure has experienced a phenomenal rise. The expenditure of correspondence courses incurred to provide numerous facilities to the students has risen from Rs 2.5 crore to above Rs 4.00 crore. The correspondence courses started nine new courses during 2000-2001 session. The number of courses has increased to 57 with the addition of eight new courses during the present session. Mr Chaudhry is credited to have taken a personal interest in the expansion of Directorate of Distance Education under the supervision of Dr L.C. Gupta, Director, Distance Education so that those students who could ill-afford to get education through regular courses could benefit. The syllabi for BA (I) B.Sc (I), MA (P), M.Sc (P), M.Phil, Commerce Education and Laws was revised during 2002-2003 on the pattern of the model curriculum of the UGC. In order to make Sanskrit popular, Mr Chaudhry got started a Sanskrit speaking course. Besides, Master of Hotel Management in the Department of Tourism was started. The library is the core of academic activity in any university. The Vice-Chancellor undertook major renovation work of Nehru Library. An amount of Rs 72 lakh was sanctioned for air-conditioning of the first and second floors. The networking of the library was completed and above all 13,000 books valued at Rs 39.64 lakh purchased. In order to rationalise the examination conduct system and the declaration of results in time, Mr Chaudhry introduced spot evaluation from September-2000. Because of this, it was ensured that results were declared in time. Similarly, unfair means cases were disposed off quickly. During the March 2002-2003 session about 3432 cases of UMC were received for which five UMC committees were constituted. As a result, 3200 UMC cases have been decided at 14 meetings. Among the major
construction projects completed during his period were the building of
National Institute of Laws, Correspondence Courses building, Home
Science and Social Sciences building, boys hostel for five-year law
students, engineering block, Dr Ambedkar Bhawan (for girls), 16 H-type
houses, 8 D-type houses for employees, extension of Vice-Chancellor’s
office, extension of Department of Electronic Science, library,
University Colege building and examination hall building. The third
gate of the university was renovated and named Shri Krishan Dwar. |
