New Delhi, February 26
Eight persons, including five BSF jawans, were killed in Tripura and one in Nagaland during polling held along with Himachal Pradesh and Meghalaya Assemblies today with an estimated 70 per cent voters exercising their franchise.

Byelections to seven Assembly constituencies spread over six states passed off peacefully with an estimated 60 per cent polling.

The Election Commission, announcing the figures here, expressed satisfaction over the peaceful conduct of the polls in all states.

In Tripura, at least four Border Security Force (BSF) jawans and a civilian were gunned down by outlawed militants in the Santaram area.

Despite assurances of non-interference by the NSCN (IM) in election process in Nagaland, its cadres defied the undertaking and indulged in violence in which one member of the outfit was killed. UNIBack
