Patiala, February 24
The Patiala Heritage Festival concluded with Sukhwinder singing the “Dil Se” number “Chaiya Chaiya”. Patialvis danced along with their favourite Punjabi pop stars despite a brief spell of drizzle.

If Sukhwinder’s “Chaiya Chaiya” brought people on their toes, Jasbir Jassi’s “Kudi Gujarat di” made them sway with the number. Jassi enthralled the audience with a vast repertory of songs. Comedians Jaswinder Bhalla and Bal Mukand Sharma added spice to the show with their wit.

Rain tried to play a spoilsport, but Patialvis braved the brief spell of drizzle to see their favourite singers.

The programme started with Jasbir Jassi taking to the stage with his famous Punjabi numbers. He began with “Ek tara vajda ve” and went on to sing “Kuri kuri” and “Kuri Gujarat di”.

After Jassi’s performance, Sukhwinder took to the stage with “Chhan chhan chanakti yeh kaisi bijuria”. He followed this up with “Kambakth ishk”. Sukhwinder bound the audience together despite drizzle. He provided a rich milieu of songs on his maiden performance in the city.

Jaswinder Bhalla and Bal Mukand Sharma interspersed the programme with clean comedy items. Other artistes also performed at the function, which was specially organised at the YPS stadium to accommodate a large audience. The show was compered by Satinder Satti and Mink Singh.

After highlighting the heritage of Patiala at the Heritage Festival, which concluded yesterday night, the Punjab Government has now decided to focus on the Harmandar Sahib in Amritsar.

Announcing this at the concluding function of the Patiala Heritage Festival at the Quila Mubarak yesterday evening, the Cultural Affairs Minister, Mr Ashwani Sekhri, said steps to get the Harmandar Sahib declared a World Heritage site had already been taken. Mr Sekhri said besides this, steps would be taken to target non-resident Indians to visit the Harmandar Sahib and farm tourism facilities could be provided to them.

Mr Sekhri said the fact that Maharaja Ranjit Singh had contributed to the present splendour of the Harmandar Sahib would be highlighted during a programme scheduled to be held in Amritsar later this year. He said a Rs 5 crore project depicting the life of Maharaja Ranjit Singh through paintings and other works would be a highlight of the Amritsar festival.

The Patiala MP, Mrs Preneet Kaur, said besides Amritsar, the state government had similar plans for Kapurthala and Anandpur Sahib. She said while Kapurthala would be projected as a city of unique architecture, Anandpur Sahib would be introduced as the birthplace of Khalsa. She said efforts were on to get the Khalsa Heritage Project completed by September, 2004.

Meanwhile, a cheque for Rs 15 lakh was handed over to Sunita Rani for her performance during the Asian Games. Also cheques for Rs 1 lakh each were given to the kin of theatre artistes Manjit Kaur, Harpreet Kaur and Daljit Singh who were killed in a road accident along with noted theatre personality Harpal Tiwana last year.

The Deputy Commissioner, Mr Tejveer Singh, said though the Heritage Festival had formally ended, the craft mela at the Sheesh Mahal would continue till March 2.
