With the Ayodhya issue taking centrestage in the Budget session of Parliament, President A.P.J. Abdul Kalam today asked political parties and religious leaders to accept the court verdict on the issue.

The Congress today took exception to the reference to “partisan” Gujarat Assembly elections in President A.P.J. Abdul Kalam’s address to the joint session of Parliament, saying that Chief Minister Narendra Modi and other BJP leaders had run an election campaign in the state in “total contravention” of the Constitution.

The election rallies of AICC President Sonia Gandhi at Kulu and Balh, scheduled to be held tomorrow, have been cancelled due to bad weather. Senior Congress leader R.K. Dhawan said that a heavy rainfall continued to lash the Kulu and Mandi region and as such it was not possible to hold the scheduled meetings.

Reduce MSP, opine experts
New Delhi, February 17
The government should reduce the minimum support price for wheat and paddy which would encourage farmers to diversify their crops, agricultural experts said here today. “The present MSP for wheat and rice, does not encourage farmers to diversify, as he is assured of the minimum price they would get for the produce,” Prof Abhijit Sen, former chairman of the Agriculture Price Reform Committee, told The Tribune.

Cotton prices touch record high
Bathinda, February 17
Expecting a considerable decline in the overall production of cotton in the country, its prices, which have been rising for the past two weeks. today touched a record high of Rs 2525 in the markets of North India today. The raw cotton (Narma) has been fetching Rs 700 more per quintal as compared to the prices, which prevailed in the corresponding period last year.
