Muslim Law Board opposes govt move on
Ayodhya New Delhi, February 9 However, the legal committee of the board, which met here under the chairmanship of the board’s general secretary Syed Nizamuddin, decided not to oppose the government’s plea for early and expeditious hearing in the case pending before the Supreme Court. The meeting, attended by five members and two special invitees, including former Union Minister Syed Shahabuddin, felt that the ground situation in Ayodhya had not changed as claimed by the government in the plea. The BJP criticised the board’s decision of today on the Ayodhya issue and said the board had no stake in the matter and should desist from creating “confusion” on the issue. “They (All-India Muslim Personal Law Board members) have no stake in the issue. Why are they making comments and taking a stand? The government has not taken any move with regard to the disputed land,” BJP President M. Venkaiah Naidu told reporters here. Meanwhile, the All India Muslim Personal Law Board today said it was willing to consider any fresh proposal from the Kanchi seer on the issue but ruled out any dialogue with the Sangh Parivar. Ahead of the VHP’s ‘Shiladaan’ programme in March last year, the board had shot down a similar peace move by the Kanchi Shankaracharya and had described his formula as “incomplete.” |
