UP MLA convicted under TADA

New Delhi, February 4
Mukhtar Ahmmed Ansari alias Javed, a sitting MLA of Uttar Pradesh, was today convicted by a special court here in Delhi under the Terrorists and Disruptive Activities (Prevention) Act (TADA) and the Arms Act.

Designated Judge S.N. Dhingra, who would pronounce the order tomorrow, held Ansari guilty of possessing fire arms and ammunitions illegally in the notified area of Delhi under Section 5 of TADA and under Section 25 (B) of the Arms Act.

The special judge in his order stated, “I hold the accused guilty of consciously possessing fire arms and ammunitions without any licence in Delhi and thereby committing offence under the Arms Act.”

“I also hold him guilty of consciously possessing fire arms and ammunitions without any licence within the notified area of Delhi and thereby committing the offence u/s 5 of TADA. I convict the accused under both the provision of law,” he added.

According to the law, the maximum punishment prescribed under the section of TADA is life imprisonment and fine. Under the Arms Act, the punishment could be a maximum of seven years and fine.

Ansari was arrested on December 11, 1993, by the Kalkaji police for illegal possession of arms and ammunitions. The police had registered a case against Ansari under TADA after two English guns and two rifles along with a large number of cartridges were recovered from him. UNI
