Panchkula, January 20
A senior Punjab IAS officer and the wife of another very senior Punjab IAS officer had to spend about three hours in the Sector 5 police station here tonight. They were brought to the police station by certain Haryana police officials posted here.

Two cars, one E-class Mercedes (HR 51K 0005), a white Ambassador (PB 65-7373), which seemed to be an official car as it had a red light atop it, and a Mitsubishi Lancer with a Chandigarh number accompanied them.

Inquiries revealed that the Ambassador was the official car of a powerful Principal Secretary to the Punjab Government.

According to reliable sources, when the man told the Haryana police officials that he was a senior IAS officer of the Punjab cadre, the Haryana police officials contacted a senior Punjab officer for verifying the identity of the person in the police station. However, the sources say, the Punjab officer did not give a satisfactory reply.

The sources say even the husband of the woman told the police that and the woman might be lying as his wife was admitted to a Chandigarh hospital.

Among the Haryana police officers present in the police station were the Panchkula, DSP, Headquarters, Mr Deshbandhu, and a law officer.

The Lancer left the police station at 10.45 pm, while the other two cars left along with their passengers at 11 pm.

Mr Deshbandhu denied the presence of any Punjab officer or any woman other than the women constables of the Haryana police in the police station. He said no Punjab VIP had visited the police station in the evening.
