OME sixty years ago, a teenaged boy left his native village in Gurdaspur for Bombay to try his luck in Bollywood. That was after much persuasion by his childhood friend, Satindra Singh, who later became a journalist and retired as the Chief of Bureau, The Tribune, in 1986. Singh had assured his friend that he would look after his family whilst he kept his tryst with destiny in Bombay. Two years later, Singh’s friend got the much-awaited break when he was signed for the lead role in Hum Ek Hain. Dev Anand, the star, was born in 1945.
