NRIs, PIOs honoured

New Delhi, January 9
Prime Minister Atal Behari Vajpayee today honoured 10 eminent NRIs/People of Indian Origin (PIOs), including the Prime Minister of Mauritius, Sir Anerood Jugnauth, with the Bharat Samman Award which carries a citation and a plaque.

Sir Jugnauth is the leader of the Mouvement Socialiste Militant and became the Prime Minister of Mauritius in 1982 in a dramatic election in which his radical left-wing alliance won every single seat in the Legislative Assembly.

The other nine awardees are: Lord Navnit Dholakia, a member of the Lords Appointments Commission, Mr Rajat Gupta, MD of McKinsey and Co Inc, Prof Fatime Meer, eminent film-maker from South Africa, Mr Kanakshi Gokaldas Khimji of Oman, Mr Ujjal Dosanjh, the first Indo-Canadian Premier, Dato Seri S Samy Velu, Minister of Works of Malaysia, Sir Shridath Ramphal, President of the World Conservation Union, Dr Manu Chandaria, CEO of the Comcraft Group of South Asia, and Mr Bob Naroomal Harilela, an eminent businessman of Hong Kong.
