Tribune News Service

Shimla, December 25
In the largest-ever narcotics seizure in the country, the police today seized 107 kg of high quality hashish, worth over Rs 10.75 crore, at Manali in Kulu district.

The hashish was stored in the shape of cakes and “chapattis” by Chande Ram, alias Chander Negi, of Malana village who was living in a rented house. The police raided the house on a tip-off. It had been kept in 11 packets wrapped in polythene and locked in a box.

Interrogation revealed that Chande Ram had hired two houses and also ran a travel agency at Manali. He was a drug smuggler and used to run the trade with the help of Gorkha workers. He used to send consignment of the contraband to foreign countries.

Passbooks of different banks along with other valuable documents had also been seized. The police had also taken up the case with the competent authorities at the Centre under the Smugglers and Foreign Exchange Manipulators (Forfeiture of Property) Act.

With this haul, the Kulu police has seized 750 kg of hashish during the past 24 months, three times more than the total seizures over the past decade.

The police has forwarded the case for rewarding the team comprising Mr Arvind Negi, DSP, Mr Badri Singh, Inspector, Mr Gurdial Singh, head constable and Mr Ajay Kumar, constable, to the DGP.
