Kendriya Vidyalayas to have computers

OF the 849 Kendriya Vidyalayas in the country, 750 are in the process of acquiring hardware and software for computer education out of the funds available with the school and/or grants released by the Kendriya Vidyalaya Sangathan (HQ). All students from Class VI onwards are being covered.

The Kendriya Vidyalaya Sangathan (KVS) has established “Teacher technology labs” in New Delhi, Chennai, Bhopal, Bangalore and Calcutta under the aegis of Intel. The master trainers are being trained in the labs and they would be training other teachers at vidyalayas. A website of KVS has also been launched.

The Union Government approved the scheme of KVS in 1962 with the idea of encouraging growth of secondary schools with a common syllabus and medium of instruction to children of Central Government employees who are liable to frequent transfers. In 1965, an autonomous body called the Kendriya Vidyalaya Sangathan (KVS), was set up to run these vidyalayas. Their number was 849 on December 31, 2001.

Of the 849 total schools, 351 are in the defence sector, 356 in the civil sector, 16 institutes are of higher learning and 124 in the project sector. There were about 7.21 lakh students studying on KVs as on August 31, 2001. Pre-primary education cell in civil KVs as has been introduced on a self-financing basis, wherever infrastructure is available.

The Minister for Human Resource Development is ex-officio chairman of the sangathan. The policies and guidelines issued by the sangathan and its Board of Governors are executed by the Commissioner who is the executive head of the sangathan.

There are 18 regional offices, headed by Assistant Commissioners, who monitor and supervise the working of KVs in the region.

On the recommendations of various ministries, departments of Central Government/ State governments of the Central Government Employee Welfare Association, etc. KVs have been opened in the civil sector. Similarly, KVs have been opened on the recommendations of the Ministry of Defence in the defence sector.

The KVs are also being opened in the project sector in the campuses of PSUs and institutions of higher learning if the recurring and non-recurring expenditure is fully met by the sponsoring authorities.

The salient features of KVs are: They fulfil the commitment to cater to the educational needs of the wards of transferable Central Government employees. All KVs are co-educational and composite.

No tuition fee is charged from students up to Class VIII, the wards of staff of KVs, SC/ST students, children of officers and men of the armed forces killed or disabled during the wars of 1962, 1965 and 1971 against China and Pakistan and girl students up to Class XII.

The basic criteria for admission in Class I in KVs is transferability of the parent, during the past seven years.

The next category for admission is children of state government transferable employees.

The sangathan is funded from the non-Plan funds of the government. However, some funds are allotted under Plan head too. The sanctioned budget is like this.

1996-97 278.50 21.90
