A nursery for MBAs How to face an interview? |
|
A nursery for MBAs Kurukshetra The department is not lagging in promoting research work in order to meet the emerging demands of industry and global competitiveness. It has so far produced 52 Ph.Ds in varied functional areas. At present 22 Ph.D scholars are working on various research projects. Dr Dwivedi feels that as a part of future designing, the institute needs to focus on building the management competence of students rather than imparting knowledge using computer based and allied simulations of business reality. The institute has introduced effective management education for meeting the future managerial needs of the corporate world. It is planning upgradation of teaching and bringing innovative methods so that the organisational capabilities of the future managers are strengthened. Dr Dwivedi, who has been associated with the department since its inception as a separate entity in 1976, aims at creating better liaison between industry and the department so that students could take up research projects in order to solve the problems which have beset industrial growth. The main concept is to turn the department into a learning laboratory. The department is also taking steps so that MBAs are capable of saving thousands of business and industrial units dying because of cut-throat competition in a globalised economy. To achieve this, the department utilised a Rs 7 lakh grant by the UGC for strengthening its equipment and library facilities. It organised two national seminars on (a) "Corporate Restructuring" and (b) "global competitiveness and Indian corporate sector" to achieve its aim of providing innovative management education. The courses have been revised several times in line with the requirements of business and industry. The model curriculum of the UGC was introduced in March this year. All this the department is achieving with a comparatively far less as compared to the Indian Institutes of Management (IIMS). The Chairman has fixed a deadline of
100 per cent placement of the passing-out students by February-end. As
many as 15 to 20 business houses are expected to visit the department
after January 15 for placements. |
How to face an interview? The exponential rise in unemployment has had a cascading effect on our youth. Competition is becoming harder. The survival of the fittest is the password. The youth, after obtaining qualifying degree, have to pass through several stages to reach the goal. There are thousands of applications for a few posts and screening tests aggravate the already grim state of affairs. Many applications are rejected on scrutiny. In a nutshell, only few candidates are called for the interview and this is where the final battle is to be won. In an interview, a candidate is not only judged for his subject knowledge, but also other abilities — expression, confidence and mannerism. We can say that an interview is a widely used method for personality assessment. Most interviews are unstructured, but some use a set questions in a given sequence. Skilled interviewers pay attention to what is said and take notice of how a response relates to a non-verbal cue such as posture and facial expression. The very first thing the candidates should keep in mind is their dress and looks. A well-groomed candidate indicates that he cares not only for himself, but for others too. When a candidate enters the interview hall, his first impression conditions the mind of the interview board. A graceful and pleasing figure can be perpetual letter of recommendation. The second noticeable thing is body language. His confidence and voice is important. I remember the case of my four-year-old son who could not cope with his nursery teacher. The teacher though intelligent, had a harsh voice and unpleasant looks. Two days in her class proved bad for my child and on the advice of school staff, I had to withdraw my son from the school. You can always improve upon your voice and looks. Tape your voice and listen carefully or stand in front of a mirror and watch your face expressions. Remember your qualifying degree and medals are not enough for selection. Bad performance in interview may act as a spoilsport. For example, in teaching profession, a candidate with good communication skills, pleasing personality and clear audible voice may prove to be a better teacher in comparison with others. While appearing for interview, on
should be relaxed and attentive. You will be evaluated for your
ability to combat strain. There may be some questions related to
general awareness and your intellectual level too. So next time to go
for an interview, remember to put your foot best forward. |
