59 pc turnout in LS, Assembly by-elections

New Delhi, December 12
Amidst tight security, an estimated 59 per cent voters today exercised their franchise in the by-election to three Lok Sabha and five Assembly constituencies spread across six states.

Polling was peaceful in three Lok Sabha constituencies of Mehsana in Gujarat, Godda in Jharkhand and Nainital in Uttaranchal and Assembly constituencies of Daporiji (Arunachal Pradesh), Khumtai (Assam) and Bansur, Sagwara and Bali in (Rajasthan).

Daporji recorded the highest turnout of 70 per cent while Nainital witnessed the lowest of 33 per cent. An ailing Uttaranchal Chief Minister N.D. Tiwari could not cast his vote in Nainital, the seat vacated by him. PTI
