Amritsar, December 7
The state government is contemplating a hike in the fee structure of government colleges with a view to improve their infrastructure which is in a bad shape these days.

As compared to the private colleges, the fee structure of the government colleges is extremely low.

Though the issue of fee hike was discussed in the meeting of the coordination committee of Vice-Chancellors, presided over by the Higher Education Minister, Mr Khushhal Behal, this week, it would again come up for deliberations in the ensuing meeting, scheduled to be held at Chandigarh on December 13.

Talking to the TNS on telephone, Mr Behal said the other issues discussed in the meeting included, bringing uniformity in syllabi at the undergraduate level in the colleges affiliated to Guru Nanak Dev University, Panjab University, Chandigarh, and Punjabi University, Patiala. Besides this, three languages academies, including the Punjabi academy, the Urdu academy and the Hindi academy were mooted in the meeting. These academies will be financed by all three universities.

The meeting was attended by Dr S.P. Singh, Mr S.S. Boparai and Dr K.N. Pathak, Vice-Chancellors of Guru Nanak Dev University, Punjabi University and Panjab University respectively, Mr N.S. Rattan, secretary Higher Education and DPI (colleges).

Mr Behal told the TNS that the issue to change the jurisdiction of three universities may also come up for discussions in the ensuing meeting. There were some recommendations to bring colleges of Muktsar under Punjabi University, which are at present affiliated to Panjab University. There was also a demand to bring Hoshiarpur district (affiliated to Panjab University), under the jurisdiction of Guru Nanak Dev University.

It has been decided to introduce environment as a compulsory subject at the graduation level in all educational institutions affiliated to the universities. It was also decided to introduce MC and MBA at college level after getting approval from the All-India Council for Technical Education.
