Srinagar, December 3
With the surrender of a militant of the Lashkar-e-Toiba, a 20-hour-long siege of a mosque in Achabal area of Anantnag district ended this afternoon.

Elsewhere, at least nine persons, including five militants were killed and four injured in separate incidents of violence in Jammu and Kashmir.

The siege of a mosque at Sheikh Gund near Achchabal in Anantnag district ended at 3 pm today with the surrender of Lashkar-e-Toiba militant Bashir Ahmad Wani of the nearby Sopshali village who, according to the police, had returned from Pakistan about seven months back after arms training.

The IG, Police, Kashmir Range, claimed that the surrender was a major achievement of the police and security forces as the militant were planning a suicide attack on an Army camp in Anantnag.

On specific information the police and security forces cordoned off Sheikh Gund village, yesterday, during which one militant took shelter in a local mosque. Three of his accomplices are believed to have escaped. So that the sanctity of the mosque was not violated the security forces persuaded him to surrender.

A mentally challenged person was shot dead by the forces at their camp in Budgam district early this morning on suspicion.

Two militants were killed in an encounter with the security forces in Kulgam area of Anantnag district yesterday. Two rifles, four magazines, 45 rounds and two hand grenades were found at the site of the encounter.

A militant of the Lashkar-e-Toiba outfit was killed and two security personnel were injured in an exchange of fire at Sadhu Ganga Kandi Harran jungles in Kupwara district. The militant was identified as Mansoor Ahmad, alias Abu Furqan, from Pakistan. A rifle, three magazines, 90 rounds and a hand grenade were found at the encounter site. Two militants were killed in an encounter in Banihal area of Doda district. Two rifles, 11 magazines, 266 rounds and four hand grenades were found at the site.

Unidentified militants killed two persons in Rajouri district last night. Militants shot dead Mangta in Amrohi Karnah village in Kupwara district. Another person, Ashiq Hussain Kumhar, was shot dead by unidentified militants in Bandipore area of Baramula district.

Militants triggered a powerful IED at Sarnal, about 3 km from Pahalgam, today when a Border Security Force (BSF) vehicle was passing through the area. The blast took place seconds after the vehicle crossed the area. There was no report of casualty.
