Gujarat VHP leader shot at, hurt seriously

Ahmedabad, December 3
Two motorcycle-borne gunmen shot at and wounded Gujarat VHP general secretary Jaideep Patel from point-blank range while he was travelling in a car near his house here this evening.

Deputy Commissioner of Police S.K. Gadhvi said Mr Patel was hit in the neck and had been admitted to a private hospital where his condition was serious.

He said two unidentified gunmen in their 20s and wearing jeans and jackets overtook Mr Patel’s car when it slowed down at a speed trap at Naroda locality near his house at around 5 pm and opened fire at him.

Bullets pierced the window of the car and hit Mr Patel, who was sitting in the rear, in his neck, he said.

It appears that the assailants have used a revolver-like weapon in the attack, he said.

As the news of the attack spread, VHP activists rushed to the hospital.

Mr Gadhvi said the situation in the area was peaceful and well under control.

NEW DELHI: VHP Working President Ashok Singhal on Tuesday alleged that the murderous attack on Mr Patel in Ahmedabad was the result of a “deep-rooted conspiracy of jehadi forces” to silence the Hindus.

In a strongly-worded statement here, Mr Singhal said the car accident involving BJP general secretary Rajnath Singh and the attack on Mr Patel could not be overlooked as a “mere coincidence.”

Condemning the attack, he demanded the immediate arrest of the assailants and stern action against them. PTI
