Be a ‘green’ entrepreneur
B.S. Rathore

GREEN is an all-pervasive word, which denotes environment-friendly, eco-friendly, or sustainable growth. The word Green refers to one colour out of the seven original colours. These days ‘Green’ is becoming a movement in itself.

Everyone is aware of the term ‘entrepreneurship’ which refers to a process by which individuals launch and manage their business and industrial enterprises. Entrepreneurs are the ones who risk and invest their own capital into the business and industrial-ventures. The term ‘intrapreneurs’ refers to those who, while working for their employers, invest the employers’ capital into new industrial and business projects. The money thus earned by intrapreneurs is shared by the owners of the capital.

Thus, one can be entrepreneurial in functioning even when working for others or while in service or job. The word ‘sustainable’ means to keep on growing without causing irrepairable loss or harm to our surroundings in which the business or industrial ventures thrieve. Thus, sustainable enterprises are those which grow in a symbiotic relationship with their environment.

Entrepreneurs must possess certain quantum of knowledge, skills, and competence to make their ventures successful. Every entrepreneurial personality must acquire and exhibit the needed knowledge, skills and competencies to be successful.

The myth that entrepreneurs are borne and entrepreneurial qualities are inherent in their personalities stands exploded. Today, it has been authenticated and affirmed that entreprenurs can be made if systematic and sequential training. The characteristics of an entrepreneurial personality can be acquired by individual who undergo entrepreneurial training in the form of Entrepreneurship Development Programmes (EDPs) conducted by well-established and reputed institutions. Such training institutions have been set up by the government at the central, state and district levels. The central-level institutions in India are Entrepreneurship Development Institute of India (EDII), Ahmedabad; National Institute of Small Industries Extension Training (NISIET), Hyderabad; and National Institute of Entrepreneurship and Small Business Development (NIESBUD), New Delhi.

Also, many state governments have established state-level institutions (IInd tier) for identifying and training potential and existing entrepreneurs. The third tier of these institutions in our country is one at the district level. These small institutions run by each District Industries Centre (DIC) are in all districts of the country. The institutions at the district level are operating at very small scale and generally the DICs get their programmes like Prime Minister’s Rozgar Yojana (PMRY) conducted from nearby resource institutions like TTIs.

At Chandigarh, besides the TTTI, there are organisations like NITCON which conduct EDPs regularly throughout’ the year. The potential entrepreneurs who are interested to set up their trading and industrial ventures can contact these institutions and get training. These institutions and a myriad of other agencies like commercial institutions and get training. These institutions and a myriad of other agencies like commercial banks and financial institutions (state financial corporations and state industrial development corporations) help potential entrepreneurs in identifying their projects, selecting product or service from the opportunities available conducting market surveys for estimating demand for the selected products, preparing of project reports, availing facilities and incentives from schemes of support agencies and commercial banks and imparting training on management inputs needed to launch and successfully manage their enterprises.

In a nutshell, these institutions assist potential entrepreneurs in assemblage of resources (physical, human and financial) and mobilising the resources to make these productive. That is entrepreneurs are able to mobilise various resources from the low to a higher level of productivity. Thus they must move judiciously the available resources in a synergistic (2+2=5 effect) manner. Entrepreneurs bcome successful in their ventures when they understand and use the resources in such a way that the outputs exceed their inputs.

In view of the problem of burgeoning unemployment among the educated in our country, entrepreneurship and self-employment have emerged as a wounderful career option. It is advisable that rather than looking for government and private corporate sector jobs, the educated youths must explore the possibilities of becoming successful entrepreneurs by setting up their own private enterprises.

In wage employment one has limited income and growth opportunities. But in entrepreneurship the opportunities for growth and earning more are abundant. In other words, we can say for speedy growth and higher income entrepreneurship is a career option where sky is the limit. Moreover, the entrepreneurs are their own bosses. They can optimally use their new ideas and creativity to the maximum.

A number of opportunities exist to manufacture green products using green technologies and green processes in order to make ventures — green enterprises. There are a number of herbal products, manufactured with the use of green technologies and processes without significantly impacting upon the ecology and environment.

The term green or environmental entrepreneurship is pervasive and can be used in all areas may it be electrical, mechanical, electronics, computers, construction, chemical, medical, or any other. Every business has to be eco-friendly and must become a sustainable enterprise. These days there is a lot of emphasis on business organisations that they must get accreditation under Environment Management System (EMS) standards ISO 14001. They must adhere to the norms laid down by these environmental standards.

In addition to standards, the entrepreneurs must also understand that there is a dire need in India in specific and the world over in general that environmentally sound technologies (ESTs) or clean technologies are adopted in their enterprises at the inception stage. It has been observed that we are curative in the case of pollution rather than preventive. If we are preventive, the environment will remain pollution-free and hence, green. In our country, fly ash, leather, sugar, cement, paper and pulp technologies are the most polluting which need to be substituted by appropriate green technologies to check pollution.

It is said: ‘prevention is better than cure’. This phrase holds equally good for entrepreneurs as well. They have to take care to protect environment during the early years of their businesses enterprises. By doing so they would become real green entrepreneurs and their businesses would grow and develop as sustainable enterprises. In conclusion, we can say that it is good to become a successful entrepreneur but it, is better to be a green entrepreneur to set up and run sustainable enterprises.
