Cops attempt rape, land in jail

Jalandhar, November 20
Even as the alleged broad daylight bid by two gunmen of a judicial officer to rape two young sisters has created a fear psychosis among city residents, particularly working couples, the bravery with which the sisters retaliated the attack to outrage their modesty at their Aman Nagar house and saved themselves from the clutches of the drunken cops has become the talk of the town.

What stunned 22-year-old Sony and her younger sister Jeeta (names changed) was the changed behaviour of family acquaintances constables Kulwinder Singh and Davinder Singh, attached to a local judicial officer, when they barged into their house in an inebriated state at about 4 pm when the two sisters were alone at their house as their mother had gone to Delhi to receive her third daughter who was coming from England.

As Sony asked her younger sister to tell the constables that nobody was at home and that they should come later if they wanted to meet the other members of the family, the constables caught hold of Jeeta, slapped her, bit her at a number of places on her body and lunged forward to attack Sony in their alleged bid to molest and rape her. As Sony and Jeeta ran to the bathroom in astonishment to save themselves, the drunken constables chased them but by that time Sony and Jeeta had locked themselves in the bathroom from where they moved to the roof of the house even as the attackers made unsuccessful bids to break open the door.

“As they mistook that we had escaped in the adjoining street, they went out in the street and, meanwhile, we swiftly locked the main gate from inside and went again to the roof of the house. Meanwhile, they continued their efforts to break open the main gate but managed to break it from one side only. After this, they saw us and we had to run over roofs of adjoining houses to save ourselves from their clutches,” said a sobbing Sony, while requesting anonymity. After this the sisters reached the adjoining market with their torn clothes where shopkeepers gathered to save the girls in distress.

“The incident has shocked us. We never thought that family acquaintances could even behave in such a wild manner,” said Jeeta, alleging after being unsuccessful in their attempt, the constables returned to their home while they were in the market and took away Rs 4,0000 which the family had saved for her marriage.

Mr Parmjeet Singh Gill, SSP, said the two policemen had been suspended and a probe had been initiated against them. “We won’t spare such elements and they would get exemplary punishment,” he said.

Meanwhile, the police has arrested the two policemen. They were produced in a local court today where they were remanded in police custody for two days. A case has been registered against the constables under Sections 452, 354 and 380 of the IPC.
