Srinagar, November 20
Five infiltrators were killed by Army personnel near the LoC in Machil sector of Kupwara district while unidentified militants shot dead two persons, including a brother of the Bandipore MLA at Baramula district in north Kashmir today.

A defence spokesman here said five armed infiltrators were killed in an ambush by the Army near the LoC in Dudhi Machil sector of Kupwara district this morning. Acting on a specific information, the troops were keeping a vigil on the probable infiltration routes of the militants. When they spotted a group of infiltrators, they asked them to surrender. The infiltrators opened fire on the troops, which resulted in retaliation, leading to the death of five militants.

Meanwhile, unidentified militants shot dead a contractor, Ghulam Nabi Ganai, brother of Mr Usman Majid Ganai, MLA, near Garoora village in the Bandipore area of Baramula district. Giving details of the incident, a police spokesman said militants fired upon a protesting mob and policemen near Garoora village, killing one person on the spot and injuring five, three of them police personnel. Of them, an ASI, Ghulam Rasool, succumbed to his injuries while being taken to a hospital here.

Meanwhile, three militants, including two Islamic Front activists and a Lashkar-e-Toiba militant, were arrested in separate operations here today, a BSF spokesman said.

The two militants of the Islamic Front, Aziz Ahmad Khan and Riyaz Ahmad Wani, were arrested by the BSF during a raid on their hideout at Lal Bazar on the outskirts of Srinagar, he said, adding that two hand grenades were seized from their possession.

Another militant hide-out was raided by the BSF at Wanpora near Nowgam, also on the city outskirts, and a Pakistan-trained Lashkar-e-Toiba militant was apprehended, the spokesman said.

He identified the captured LeT militant as Shoukat Ahmad Malik and said a Chinese pistol, a magazine and seven rounds of ammunition were seized from his possession.

Meanwhile, residents of Pattan blocked traffic on the Srinagar-Baramula road for nearly three hours this morning in protest against the arrest of a local youth by the Army three days ago, official sources said. PTI
