Tablet adds ink into the mix
Vibhor Sood

REVOLUTION is a way of life. When it comes to software, most of them come from Bill Gates who has changed personal computing, entirely. Recently, Gates announced the launch of Windows XP tablet edition for Tablet PC.

Tablet PC is a new computing device optimised for mobility and designed to be convenient, light and ergonomic. This device enables any Windows-based application to take advantage of pen-based input. Handwriting is captured as rich digital ink for immediate or later manipulations, including reformatting ad editing. The linkage between the pen input process and a wide range of Windows-based applications will give users new ways of collaborate, communicate and bringing their PC to bear new tasks like, updating documents on the fly and transmitting them wirelessly. Tablet PC is light enough to be carried in one hand. This device can also be attached to a keyboard.

Benefits

The Tablet is a wonderful tool that can be used to enhance productivity. This device, because of design, can be incorporated into daily life of persons from all strata of life. Instead of carrying notepads to the meetings, Tablet PCs could be carried and these can then be scribbled upon just like you do it on paper. These documents can then easily be transported anywhere with the help of wireless features that Tablet provides.

Writers can carry Tablets and whenever they come across a thought they can jot it down on it. This gives them the freedom to be more creative and hence increase creativity. Tablet PC could be used by a housewife to jot down the list of things that she wants from the market and also manage home budget. Even a student could carry it to make document for each class he attends and scribble all that he wants to on the tablet .he could then transmit the notes to a friend who is not able to attend the class coz he is sick or he is out partying. As Gates said: "It is a vertical product. Virtually every application written for the PC can be enhanced by adding ink into the mix".

How it works

The Tablet works on inking technology that depends on a digitiser laid over or under the LCD screen to create an electromagnetic screen field which can capture the motion as a series of data-points reflected on the screen. They would also require a special purpose pen. In laymen terms, all this means that a user cannot inadvertently create a mark on the Tablet document using a finger. It will only recognise a pen that actually has the ability to hover, allowing it to move the cursor without actually touching the LCD screen. The digitisers used in Tablet PCs are capable of sampling 130 "pen events" per second allowing them to create the effect of "real time inking." This in turn allows the digital ink to appear at the same speed as the pen writes, no matter how fast it moves. Windows XP Tablet PC edition is capable of recording the digital ink as ink or translate it into text. Either way it is fully searchable and exportable, even allowing the user to send hand written e-mails whether or not the recipient has a Tablet PC.

Future

Though still in nascent stage, Tablet PC has immense potential. They are heavily dependent on handwriting recognition software. This software is still evolving and with time it is bound to get more intelligent. With the advancement in this technology increased acceptance seems to be the order of the day.
