Jammu, November 15
The state unit of the Akali Dal (Amritsar) has hailed the Chief Minister, Mufti Mohammad Sayeed, for having elected a Sikh farmer, Mr Tarlok Singh Bajwa, to the Rajya Sabha.

At a meeting held here today under the chairmanship of Mr J.S. Mangal, Akali Dal (Amritsar) leaders said it was for the first time in four decades that the Sikhs got representation in the Rajya Sabha.

Those who attended the meeting included Bhai Ram Singh, Mr Ravinder Singh, Mr Malvinder Singh, Mr Dalbhijan Singh, Mr Jagjit Singh and Mr Bhopinder Singh.

The leaders hoped that Mr Bajwa would raise the issue of 1947 Pakistan refugees settled in Jammu in the Rajya Sabha. The Sikh leaders adopted a resolution urging the Chief Minister to induct Mr Manjit Singh, the only Sikh leader having been elected to the state Assembly, in the Cabinet. The resolution said the Sikh community had received a raw deal as far its share in the legislature and professional colleges was concerned and hoped that Mufti Mohammad Sayeed would end this discrimination.
