Property worth 4 cr detected
BSNL official among 6 in CBI net

The CBI today claimed to have detected property, cash, investments worth around Rs 4 crore during its fourth special countrywide raids conducted at the premises of 46 public servants, besides some private persons.

The Division Engineer, Telephones, of Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited at Hoshiarpur, Dharampal, is among six government officials booked for having assets disproportionate to their known sources of income, agency sources said here today.

During the search conducted at two premises belonging to Dharampal, Rs 1.09 lakh cash and Rs 26 lakh worth FDs/bonds were recovered and immovable properties worth over Rs 75 lakhs were detected, CBI sources said.

According to sources, during the countrywide raid the CBI detected property worth around Rs 2 crore, cash, securities and investments worth over Rs 65 lakh, valuables like jewellery and other household items worth over Rs 20 lakh besides antiques of approximately Rs 1 crore have been detected. Twentyfive cases were registered and 75 locations searched. During the raids, premises of 46 public servants were also searched, besides several surprise checks, including in the offices of Divisional Medical Stores of Railways at Danapur, Bihar, United India Insurance at Indore and at Ordnance Factory at Katni.

Cases of disproportionate assets cases have also been registered against A M Sonnad, Executive Engineer of Administration of Union Territory of Daman and Diu, KPK Nawani Ranjan, Senior Airport Terminal Manager at Goa, Balkrishan, Deputy General Manager of Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited at Jodhpur, A Narasimhalu, Superintendent of Central Excise and Customs at Hyderabad and P Prabhakaran, Superintendent of Customs at Custom House, Chennai.

Properties, cash, bank balances, FDs/bonds and jewellery worth lakhs of Rupees have been seized from these five government servants, sources said.

In Delhi, a case has been registered under the Antiquities and Art Treasures Act and searches were conducted on precise information of smuggling of antiques and four idols alleged to be of 14th century A D worth over Rs 1 crore have been recovered.

In another case, two persons — Mr M.P. Mishra and Mr Ashok Kumar — posing as Public Notary have been arrested .

In a case registered at Kolkata against a branch manager of the Union Bank of India and a private firm, searches from the house of a Bank Manager in Bhubaneshwar have yielded NSC/Bonds of Rs 2 lakh, cash certificates of over Rs 1.4 lakh, two signed blank cheques and blank demand drafts of the bank.

In another case registered by the Economic Offences Wing of the CBI against a private firm, three places were searched in Delhi and Gurgaon. Incriminating documents and an illicit weapon, a .315 country made pistol was recovered.

In Chennai, in a case registered under offences of cheating and forgery and other sections of law, for adulteration of petroleum products, searches have led to recovery of incriminating material against the accused firm.

In two cases of wrongful loss of over Rs 2.6 crore registered at Mumbai, against officers of Punjab and Sind Bank - K R Goeland Rakesh Bahal and a private person -M B Bakshi, Director of Alpine Capitals, searches were conducted at eight places in Mumbai and Surat and incriminating documents have been seized from official and residential premises.
