How to select a good school for your child EVERY parent wishes to provide the best available education to his ward. Verbal gimmicks by schools via advertisements claiming the best services compound the confusion. What are the parameters to find out whether a school promotes excellence in teaching and learning and guarantees a balanced growth of personality of child? Just by the virtue of 100% result and dozens of distinctions in final examination, as boasted by schools they cannot be rated as centers of excellence. One should not be misled by these claims, as things have to be taken from a broader perspective. In most of these schools all available means are utilised to achieve good annual result.Such an examination oriented approach has its flaws, which don’t stand a pupil in good stead in future. So many examples can be quoted of high-scoring pupils who flounder when they sit for a competitive exam. Good schooling is much more than this. Education entrepreneurs want to take advantage of this high demand for quality education. They resort to all sorts of tricks like hollow publicity gimmickry but recruit under-qualified and incompetent staff so that they don’t have to dole out high salaries. All tools of education and infrastructure are rendered useless and ineffective when there is lack of workmanship. Parents should ascertain what are the various opportunities offered for the child to make him acquire a superior level of communication skills and whether his creative skills are enhanced in a stimulating and congenial environment through innovative teaching methods. The future career prospects of a child a large extent depend on his proficiency in information technology and related fields. With the government deciding to add 46,000 more seats for institutions offering expertise and training in these fields, info-tech is high on every ambitious parent’s priority list. So the parents must examine whether a school caters to these requirements to prepare the basics for IT and whether there is a provision for advanced computer software with Internet accessibility. Today’s competition makes it necessary to groom the youngsters from the very beginning and make them career-minded. This requires delicate handling and psychological counselling during formative years.School plays a crucial role, next only to home. Emotional Intelligence (E.I) has a significant bearing on the child’s performance and personality development. A school must have its career guidance and counselling cell under the charge of a qualified psychologist or a senior teacher. Co-curricular activities provide an outlet for the flow of surplus energies of pupils and these should be an integral part of any school programme.Such activities along with academic exercise, are essential for the total personality development. There should be a provision for competent instructors in disciplines like art, craft, and music and these activities should be organised in such a way that a maximum number of students can come out to express themselves without hesitation or inhibition. There should be a provision for proper physical grooming of children with adequate sports facilities and latest equipment along with proficient coaches and physical instructors.Emphasis on academics alone saps the energy of students and chills their exuberance and enthusiasm. Without strength in the nerves and vigour in the blood,’ every achievement pales into insignificance.A good school provides well-planned programme for physical education. It is better to opt for a school away from polluted, busy and noisy environment away from the madding crowd. It should have spacious classrooms and sprawling play fields. A regular interaction between parents and teachers is bound to improve classroom teaching. Knowledge about home atmosphere and parents enables a teacher to handle a child effectively. Besides the medium of instruction, board affiliation, courses offered, facilities offered for scholarship and guidance for competitive exams, study tours and excursions and transportation facilities should be kept in mind. — M.
