ASI attached to SGPC member shot dead
Our Correspondent

Amritsar, October 15
An ASI of the Punjab police, Mr Randhir Singh, attached as personal security officer to an SGPC member, Mr Balwant Singh Dhillon, was shot dead at around 8.30 p.m. today in the Labh Nagar locality on the Ram Tirath road.

Neighbours said there was a sound of firing and later it was found that an ASI was killed in it.

The incident has sent shock waves among residents of the area.

A large posse of police reached the spot and cordoned off the locality. Senior police officers said there was some dispute between Mr Dhillon and his tenant Satnam Singh which resulted in firing in which the ASI, who tried to save the situation, was killed.

Sources in the SAD alleged that the government, under the garb of proving security to SGPC members, was keeping them under surveillance for political reasons.

The Akali leadership alleged that “cats” had deliberately indulged in the firing which was aimed at Mr Dhillon, who escaped unhurt, but the bullet hit the ASI, resulting in his death.

The SAD chief, in a statement after the incident, said the government was trying to achieve illegitimate goals through such action and was working against the provisions of the Constitution.
