Police remand for Salman
Mumbai, October 7 Meanwhile, Salman was today remanded in police custody till October 10 in the case. Salman surrendered before the police at Bandra this afternoon after the government informed the Mumbai High Court that he would be booked under Section 304. His vehicle allegedly rammed into a bakery on September 28, killing one person and injuring four others. Salman surrendered before the police shortly after a tougher charge of culpable homicide not amounting to murder was slapped on him in the hit-and-run case in the face of a public outcry that he was let off on a Rs 950 bail bond. Thirtyseven-year-old Salman faced the new charge under Section 304, a non-bailable offence, 10 days after he was initially booked for negligent and rash driving. Salman was then let off after furnishing a bond of Rs 950 triggering a public outcry forcing the Deputy Chief Minister Chhagan Bhujbal to pull up the police. Salman’s surrender on a day of fast-paced developments came after the prosecution informed the Mumbai High Court that Salman would be booked for culpable homicide not amounting to murder. If convicted, he faces imprisonment up to 10 years. The high court also ordered him to pay a compensation of Rs 10 lakh to the kin of the deceased, Rs 3 lakh to the people with multiple injuries and Rs 1.5 lakh to the victims with simple injuries.
