10 militants killed
Mehbooba Mufti escapes attack
Srinagar, October 4
At least 11 persons, including 10 militants, were killed and four others injured in separate incidents and a large quantity of arms and ammunition seized in Kashmir valley since yesterday. A jawan of the CRPF was injured seriously in a shootout near the office of an Independent candidate from Lolab in Kupwara town this afternoon.

Security forces seize a cache of explosives and ammunition in Jammu and Kashmir.

Islamabad, October 4
Pakistan today “successfully” test-fired a medium range surface-to-surface ballistic missile Hatf-IV, which can carry nuclear warheads and hit targets within the range of 750 km covering several parts of India.

India test-fires Akash
Balasore, October 4
India today successfully test-fired its most sophisticated medium range surface-to-air missile Akash from the interim test range at Chandipur-on-sea, about 15 km from here, according to official sources.

Advani for good police

Emphasising that a “good police” is an essential ingredient for good governance, Deputy Prime Minister L. K. Advani today warned that any attempt towards police reforms only from the human rights perspective will receive opposition from the police itself.

With six days of the 10-day police remand of Ravi Kant Sharma exhausted, the police is yet to get some critical answers to its queries. Highly-placed sources in the Crime Branch of the Delhi Police said while Ravi Kant Sharma was cooperating with the interrogators, he had so far successfully evaded or avoided answering some of the crucial questions.

The mystery behind the suspected droppings at a village in North Dinajpur district near the Indo-Bangladesh border where an unidentified airplane had apparently intruded into the Indian airspace deepened today with the Indian Air Force saying that none of its aircraft was flying over the area at that time.

The National Commission for Minorities and Union Chemicals and Fertilisers Minister Sukhdev Singh Dhindsa have sought the intervention of Union External Affairs Minister Yashwant Sinha in providing necessary assistance for about 20,000-25,000 Sikh youths who have migrated illegally to various countries in Europe, the USA and Canada.

The Supreme Court today directed the Karnataka Government to immediately comply with the order of the Cauvery River Authority, headed by Prime Minister Atal Behari Vajpayee, directing release of 9,000 cusecs per day to the Mettur reservoir in Tamil Nadu.
