The Union Cabinet after reconsidering the proposed Ordinance to amend the Representation of the People Act expectedly returned it to President A P J Abdul Kalam for his assent.

Ultras kill 8 in Rajouri village

At least 12 persons, including three women, were killed in three separate incidents in the region late last night. According to the police, eight civilians — most of them Gujjars — including three women were gunned down at Dudasan village in Rajouri by a group of militants.

India’s Acting High Commissioner in Islamabad was summoned to the Foreign Office today and a strong protest was lodged over what it called “the unprovoked attack by the Indian Army and the Indian Air Force on Pakistan army’s positions across the Line of Control in the Gultari sector” during the night of August 22-23.

Sonia calls govt communal, scam-tainted
New Delhi, August 24
Congress President Sonia Gandhi said today that the “scam-tainted and communal” NDA government was “neck deep in corruption” and despite having a Prime Minister and a Deputy Prime Minister, it was unable to take action against those responsible for scams.

HP Cabinet okays new norms
Shimla, August 24
The Himachal Pradesh cabinet today approved new guidelines for the regularisation of unauthorised constructions in the nagar panchayats of Dhalli, New Shimla and Totu and the creation of journalist welfare fund in the state. It also approved a youth policy.

The controversy surrounding the “godman” Ashutosh refuses to die down as the Sikh high priests today rejected the unconditional apology tendered by the secretary of the Divya Jyoti Jagriti Sansthan for injuring the sentiments of Sikhs.
