Ragging on despite ban
V.P. Prabhakar

Notwithstanding the claims by the Administration, incidents of ragging are being reported from universities and professional colleges.

In one such incident of ragging, which can be described as the worst, freshers in an engineering college of Uttaranchal had to leave their hostel under fear of being assaulted by seniors.

The seniors entered the hostel of freshers by breaking open the lock of the main gate in the night and hurled abuses at them. They were asked indecent questions.

Those who either refused to obey their orders or did not answer to their ‘vulgar questions’ were not only beaten up by the seniors, but some were even asked to take off their clothes.

At least 100 freshers fled the hostel in the night itself.

The college administration of G.B. Pant Engineering College, Ghurdauri (Uttaranchal), were able to catch hold of some of these students and pursuaded them to return. Sixty students (freshers) reached Devprayag on foot and left for their homes from there.

Keeping in view the hostile atmosphere and tension prevailing in the area because of this incident, the college authorities announced a week’s vacation for the B.E. (I) students. Though a resentment prevails among the students and parents, no case had been registered with the police, perhaps because of fear of a backlash.

In fact the incidents of ragging in this institution have been occurring for the past few days. Even senior girl students are reported to have scared a fresher so much so that she had to move to her residence for a few days. Some seniors are reported to have thrashed a junior till he fainted and had to be sent to Dehra Dun for treatment of his ears.

According to a report from Kurukshetra University, the university fined 33 girl students for allegedly indulging in ragging of freshers. However, the students, who were fined, are learnt to have said that they were not involved in the incident. They were being falsely implicated. No officer had caught them indulging in ragging. But an official insisted that students found indulging in ragging had been fined.

In another incident at Kurukshetra University, a hosteller beat his next-door neighbour, a fresher, so severely that he suffered injuries in the nose, the chest, feet and hands. Students of the B.Ed College observed a strike in protest against the brutal ragging.

According to a report fearing ragging, attendance among freshers in Himachal Pradesh University is thin.

Pathways World School, an international school coming up in the tranquil surroundings of Aravali Hills, 25 km away from Indira Gandhi International Airport, New Delhi, opens immense opportunities for a large number of children in North India, especially Punjab and Chandigarh. Students from small towns of Punjab can now get world-class education standards at Pathways.

Among one of the first schools in northern India to offer international curriculum, the school will offer primary years and diploma programmes of International Baccalaureate Organisation of Geneva and International General Certificate of Secondary Education of University of Cambridge, England. Both IB and IGCSE are recognised by the association of Indian Universities and all leading institutions such as IIT’s IIM’s and AIIMS. Pathways graduates will be prepared for entry to degree courses in first-class universities in India, the USA, the UK and all over the world. The school will offer courses from Kindergarten to Grade 12.

Commenting on the need for a school like this, Mr Prabhat Jain, promoter, Pathways World School said: "There has been a perceptible shift in the environment in which we live, but the schools have been following the same age-old patterns. With increasing internationalisation, we could perceive a need for a school that not only replaces rote learning and lends an international mindset to the children, but also a school that adapts learning-based education rather than teaching based. At Pathways we will aim at making learning an enjoyable experience and ensure that our students grow as global citizens."

The school will pioneer approaches to teaching and learning well-tried elsewhere but in India. Pathways will adopt a student-centred learning system with ample opportunities for project work and discovery learning, guided by a well-qualified international teaching faculty with generous access to quality in-service training, both in India and abroad.

The school will apply the multiple intelligences approach, developed by Dr Howard Gardner of the University of Harvard.

The school offers a flexible temperature-controlled environment designed for anywhere-anytime learning. There will be subject-based classrooms; universal radio networking and every student from Grades 6 to 12 will be equipped with a laptop computer.

The school will have six laboratories, a spacious Library-Media-Centre and studios for Art, Music, Dance, Theatre and Craft-Design-Technology. Sporting facilities include an Olympic-size football field, a 400-metre track, a 25-metre pool, a diving pool, a hockey field, a well-equipped gymnasium, squash, tennis and basketball courts and weight-training equipment.

Residential facilities are designed on the model of British boarding schools. The school also offers the flexibility of day, weekly, fortnightly and termly boarding options. Pathways World School will encourage its student community to participate in energy conservation measures through undertaking special methods as water harvesting and solar energy.

IB is recognised as equivalent to the 10+2 system of education in India by the Association of Indian Universities (AIU) which recognises IGCSE of Cambridge University as equivalent to the class X of school board examinations.
