Dowry case against Amarjit Kaur
Tribune News Service

Patiala, August 18
The local police today registered an attempt to murder and dowry case against former MP Amarjit Kaur and her son Pawaninder Singh on charges of trying to murder the latter’s wife Amrina Singh, besides demanding more dowry.

The former Congress MP, who is also related to the Chief Minister, Capt Amarinder Singh, said the registration of the case was a ‘’conspiracy’’ and demanded a fair inquiry into it. “They want to defame me and they have registered the case as they have nothing else against me’’, she added.

The Congress leader, who had unsuccessfully tried for ticket of the Ghanaur Assembly seat, however, refrained from explaining as to who wanted to defame her. She said the police had acted in haste and that such an action could not be taken against a person of her stature without a proper inquiry into the case.

According to the FIR registered in the Civil Lines police station against Mrs Amarjit Kaur and her son Pawaninder, both are accused of trying to strangulate Amrina, besides hitting her on numerous occasions. Amrina has also accused the duo of beating her up so brutally once that her foetus got aborted.

Amrina, who is the daughter of Mr Gurjit Singh Grewal, alleged in the FIR that her in-laws started demanding more dowry from her parents after she was wedded to Pawaninder on January 14 last year. She said the money was demanded for starting a hotel in Australia by her husband Pawaninder and when her parents expressed their inability they started persecuting her.

She also claimed that her parents gave her a sizeable dowry, including jewellery. She said her mother-in-law Amarjit Kaur had even taken away the jewellery from her. The case was registered on directions from SSP’s office.

Meanwhile, Mrs Amarjit Kaur claimed that all allegations were false. She said, ‘’I have been Chairperson of the Central Social Welfare Board and have been dealing with such cases. How can I practise what I have been constantly fighting against’’, she added. She said she would be consulting her advocate soon and moving an application to get the case investigated thoroughly.
