Ambala City MLA ‘assaulted’
Tribune News Service

Ambala, August 14
The MLA, Ambala City, Ms Veena Chibber, was allegedly assaulted in Baldev Nagar area early this morning.

The incident took place at about 7.15 am when Ms Chibber had gone to Baldev Nagar after receiving information that local residents had blocked the Ambala-Jagadhari road to protest against inundation of their houses.

She managed to pacify the crowd and the traffic jam was cleared. Thereafter, she went towards ward no 2 to take stock of the situation.

According to Mr Vishal Chibber, son of Ms Chibber, when his mother reached there, a youth used abusive language against her. “When my mother questioned the youth about why he was using foul language, he shoved her into the water”, he claimed.

He alleged that a former Municipal Councillor, Mr Harish Sasan and a few others had assaulted his mother after she fell into the water. They beat her up which led to many injuries, he said.

Mr Chibber said his mother had fallen unconscious due to the attack. “After she was brought to the hospital, doctors told us that her left leg was fractured, her arm injured and she had consumed water which led to uneasiness”, he said.

The IG, Mr Alok Joshi, the DC, Mr D.D. Gautam, the SP, Mr Manoj Yadava, Mr Ratan Lal Kataria, Mr Ashok Arora, Mr Pawan Dewan, Mr Kanwar Pal and Mr Krishan Pal Gujjar visited her.

A police official said it had taken a serious note of the incident. “We have formed teams which are going to trace the guilty”, he said.

However, Mr Sasan claimed that he was innocent.

“At about 1.30 a.m. last night, local residents approached me for help as water had entered their houses.

I tried to get in touch with the district administration but to no avail”, he said.

He said he had been called to participate in the jam to protest over the excess water problem. “Since the jam had been undertaken by a BJP Municipal Councillor, I stood on one side. A little later, Ms Veena Chibber arrived at the spot”, he said.

Mr Sasan stated that she managed to convince Municipal Councillor Surender Gogu that the traffic jam should be cleared. She also told me to cooperate.

“When I told her that I was with the people, she didn’t listen to me. Later, some women approached her to show her the problem area”, he said.

“In that area, there was about three feet of rain water. Ms Chibber stumbled over a stone. I did not touch her. The story about my hitting her has been cooked up”, he claimed.
