3 cops die in Jammu encounter

Jammu, August 2
Three policemen were killed and four wounded in nearly a 16-hour operation in the Raika forest area on the outskirts of the city today. One militant, identified as Mohammad Idnan of the Lashkar-e-Toiba and hailing from Lahore, was killed in the operation.

The police said a police party launched search operations yesterday in the Raika forest area, 2 km from Rajiv Nagar where the militants had killed 28 civilians on July 13, when it came under fire. Two policemen were killed yesterday.

Additional forces, including CRPF companies, were rushed to the area and this morning an encounter took place in which one militant and an SI were killed.

According to the Inspector-General Police, Mr P.L. Gupta, Idnan was one of the two militants who had carried out the massacre at Rajiv Nagar.

Meanwhile, the Chief Minister paid his last respects to the SI here.

SRINAGAR: The militants hurled a grenade on premises of the state Congress committee headquarters here on Friday but the blast caused no damage, a Congress spokesman said.Back
