Tribune News Service

New Delhi, August 1
Punjab Congress chief H.S. Hanspal today indicated that the new PCC in the state would be smaller than the existing party unit.

Addressing his maiden press conference as PCC chief along with Punjab Chief Minister Amarinder Singh, Mr Hanspal said the previous PCC was large and had been constituted keeping in view the Assembly elections. “The new PCC would be constituted according to the party constitution,” Mr Hanspal said. He, however, did not indicate any time frame for the exercise, saying that it would be done soon.

Asserting that every effort would be made to strengthen the party in Punjab, Mr Hanspal said the new PCC would be formed after consulting senior leaders.

Maintaining that the Congress in Punjab had won the poll on certain issues, he said the party would carry to the people the message of the work done by the state government.

Capt Amarinder Singh, who resigned yesterday after being PCC chief for four years, assured Mr Hanspal of all cooperation from the state government. Congress general secretary Ambika Soni was present along with Mr Charanjit Singh Channi, MP, and several party MLAs at the press conference.

Later in the evening, the Chief Minister and Mr Hanspal called on Congress President Sonia Gandhi.
