Concern over infiltration by Chinese army
Tribune News Service

New Delhi, July 23
The Rajya Sabha today expressed concern over reports of infiltration by the Chinese army into Indian territory from parts of Ladakh and Uttaranchal.

Raising the matter during a special mention, Mr Janeshwar Mishra (SP) said it was a matter of grave concern that according to reports, China has been carrying on infiltration activities into Indian territory since 1967.

Citing instances, he said Chinese soldiers entered 77 areas in Ladakh during 1998 while 44 infiltration attempts were made there during 2001-02.

Observing that the reports describe these infiltration bids as having been done in a very well-planned manner, Mr Mishra said what was of greater concern was that China claimed that these areas were a part of their territory and refused to accept the map of India showing these areas as Indian territory.

The SP member also expressed concern that Barahati area of Uttaranchal had been transformed into another Kargil, with China claiming that it had a rightful claim to this area.
