Punjab’s search for Vice-Chancellors
Tribune News Service

Chandigarh, July 11
While no name has yet been finalised for appointment as Vice-Chancellor of Punjabi University, Patiala, another slot falls vacant tomorrow when the present Vice-Chancellor of Baba Saheb Ambedkar Technical University, Jalandhar, H.S. Gurum, retires.

Informed sources told TNS that the “search committee’’ constituted for shortlisting a suitable person for appointment as Vice-Chancellor of Punjabi University has recommended three names — Dr G.S. Khush, Dr J.S. Bajaj and Dr M.S. Gill.

Dr Khush is an internationally known rice breeder, currently working in the USA; Dr Bajaj is a former member of the Planning Commission of India and Dr Gill is a former Chief Election Commissioner of India.

Informed sources say that the Chief Minister, Capt Amarinder Singh, is trying to get in touch with Dr Khush. He is not much keen on for either Dr Bajaj or Dr Gill. Nevertheless, the search committee is also reported to be having a “B’’ team. The current thinking is that the ones who apply for the post and those who are from within Punjabi University should not be considered.

As regards the technical university, there is a proposal to contact Mr Anoop Singh, who had earlier also served as Vice-Chancellor from January, 1997, to February 1999. His three-year term ended abruptly following differences with the then bureaucrats in the Department of Technical Education. Dr Anoop Singh is a former member of the Railway Board.

Appointments made by Soch to be probed
Tribune News Service

Amritsar, July 11
A high-level Vigilance inquiry has been ordered into the recruitment of lecturers in Guru Nanak Dev University during the tenure of Dr Harbhajan Singh Soch, the then Vice-Chancellor.

The inquiry was marked by Mr A.P. Pandey, Additional Director-General to Mr Tejinder Pal Singh Sandhu, SP (Vigilance). The complainant alleged that certain persons, including the daughter of Dr Soch, were appointed lecturers by ignoring merit. Dr R.S. Bawa, Registrar, confirmed that he had received a fax message from the Vigilance Bureau seeking information about the appointments. He, however, said he had yet to go through the contents of the letter.

When contacted, Dr Soch claimed that all appointments were made purely on merit.
