New Delhi, July 5
The one year imprisonment for issuing cheques which bounce has now been increased to two years. This decision was taken at a Cabinet meeting here today.

Briefing mediapersons, Union Minister for Information and Broadcasting Sushma Swaraj said the Cabinet had also okayed other "consumer-friendly" proposals, including introduction of proposal for the disposal of cases within six months from the day of filing of the complaint and summary trial through day-to-day hearings.

Apart from this, reason for adjournment would be required to be explained in writing. The pre-summoning evidence had been dispensed with. The time limit for issuing notice in case the cheque bounces had also been increased from 15 days to a month.
