UAV goes missing
Lost on routine flight: India
New Delhi, June 8
A day after US Deputy Secretary of State Richard Armitage said the tension between India and Pakistan was easing, New Delhi today said it had lost one unmanned aerial vehicle which was on a routine flight along the Indo-Pak border in Jammu and Kashmir.


Pakistan claims shooting it down

New Delhi, June 8
Pakistan Defence Ministry said in Islamabad today that the “Indian aerial vehicle was on a reconnaissance and spying mission when it violated the Pakistan airspace close to Lahore and was shot down.

External Affairs Minister Jaswant Singh today told the US Secretary of State Colin Powell that India would carefully assess and “respond appropriately and positively” to any steps Pakistan President Pervez Musharraf would take to check cross-border terrorism and infiltration.

Jammu, June 8
Three civilians were killed and as many sustained shrapnel injuries when Pakistani forces opened heavy and unprovoked mortar fire on the Pittal border out post and adjoining villages in the R.S. Pora sector and at Balnoi area in Poonch sector this morning, even as at least three Pakistani soldiers were killed in Indian retaliatory firing.

PPA to train Afghan Police
Chandigarh, June 8
The Maharaja Ranjit Singh Punjab Police Academy will add yet another feather to its cap in July or August this year when it starts training the Afghan Police on its Phillaur campus. The Bureau of Police Research and Development, of the Union Ministry of Home Affairs, has reportedly approached the Punjab Police Academy to ascertain whether it could train a select band of police officers and instructors from Afghanistan.
