Subhrangshu Gupta

Kolkata, May 9
Indian cricket captain Saurav Ganguly is likely to file a defamation suit against the Union Finance Minister, Mr Yashwant Sinha, for implicating him in the tax-dodgers list, though he has been regularly paying the income tax.

Saurav was named among others, as tax-evaders during 1999-2000 and 2000-01 by the Finance Minister in the Lok Sabha on Tuesday which Saurav, now leading the Indian team in the West Indies series strongly protested.

Saurav’s solicitor, Mr Dipak Kumar Mitra, also sent a strong protest letter to the Director, Central Board of Direct Taxes, denying that his counsel had been defaulting in any way in paying due income taxes.Mr Mitra in a statement claimed that Saurav had not only submitted his income tax return for the current year but also paid due taxes till April 2, 2002.Back
