Plantation MGMT

Q: I’m a student of BCom (Final). I want to know more about plantation management and related courses. Are there any correspondence courses?

Jaswant Gill

A: The Indian Institute of Plantation Management has introduced a 1-year postgraduate diploma course to train plantation managers in the entire value-chain starting from production to marketing. IIPM is jointly promoted by the commodity boards: Tea Board, Coffee Board, Rubber Board and the Spices Board. Several corporates including Tata Tea, Tata Coffee, Goodricke Group, Williamson Magor, and Warren Tea have instituted chairs in this unique programme. The curriculum which is rooted to the ground situation draws heavily upon that of Indian Institute of Rural Management, Anand (IRMA) and other premier B-schools. There are 30 seats in the programme.

Entry level jobs for diploma holders will be in the grade of Assistant Managers. Starting with a salary upwards of Rs 10,000.

It may perhaps interest you to know that the plantation sector employs about 7000 estate managers whose skills need to be constantly upgraded to suit the requirements of the changing scenario. Moreover, about 200 fresh plantation managers are required every year.

However I doubt if there are any courses in plantation management through correspondence.

A: Yes you are in luck. The SNDT Women’s University, Centre for Distance Education, Sir Vithaldas Vidyavihar, Juhu Road, Santacruz (W), Mumbai 400049 offers MA in Fine Arts with specialisation in Music, Art & Painting (2-year).

Aeronautics

Q: I am a Class XII student in the Science stream and wish to pursue a career in aeronautical engineering. Could you tell me about the courses in this field?

Naveen Bishnoi

A: Aeronautical Engineers are involved in the manufacture and maintenance of aircraft. Job opportunities for such engineers exist with airlines, both government carriers such as Air India and Indian Airlines and also private airlines, and aircraft manufacturers such as the Hindustan Aeronautical Ltd (HAL).

Since the openings are somewhat limited in this branch of engineering, most engineers take up jobs in R&D in the M/o Defence or M/o Civil Aviation or in defence research laboratories.

After 10+2 (PCM) or Diploma in Engg or BSc (Applied Sc), you will be eligible for courses in Aeronautical/Aerospace Engineering at the following institutes:

BE (4 years): Hindustan College of Engineering, Chennai; Park College of Engineering, Tirupur; Punjab Engineering College (Panjab Univ), Chandigarh Selection: Entrance test.

BTech (4 years): Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs), Mumbai, Kanpur, Chennai & Kharagpur. Selection: Entrance to IITs is through a common entrance test (IIT-JEE). Admission details for the others can be obtained from the concerned institutes or their websites.

Associate Membership Exam of the Aeronautical Society of India. Sections A and B of this exam have been recognised by the M/o Education, at par with a Bachelor’s degree in aeronautical engineering. ASI conducts this exam twice a year Hence you can also study aeronautical engineering from ASI through the distance mode.

For further information contact: ASI, 13-B, Indraprastha Estate, New Delhi 110002.

Tourism MGMT

Q: I’m a student of BCom. I want to do Master’s in Tourism Management. Could you please tell me about the job prospects in this field?

Mandeep Kokhar

A: Despite the post-WTC slump, Travel and Tourism still remains the fastest growing sector in the world today.

As a sunrise industry in India, it is managed both by the government as well as the private sectors.

The course if done from a good institute will qualify you for jobs in: Government tourism and information departments, ITDC and State departments of tourism-run hotels, airlines and other commercial transport services, travel agencies and by tour operators in the ticketing & reservation department, documentation, publicity and sales departments.

The Immigration and Customs departments also offer avenues for those with a background in travel and tourism. Of course, you could also consider opening your own travel agency or tour operation after you’ve learnt the ropes.

And if you are keen on a government job in this sector, be on the look out for recruitment advertisements published in Employment News and leading national dailies.

Importance of micro-electronics
D. R. Vij

FOR the progress of our country, specifically in the high-technology field of Application-Specific Integrated Circuits (ASIC) design, every concerned citizen should shun a self-centred development approach and take to team work.

Stating this, while inaugurating a two-day workshop on ASIC design, jointly organised by the Electronic Science Department, Kurukshetra University, and IEEE ED/MTT India Chapter, here on Saturday, the Semiconductor Complex, SAS Nagar, Executive Director, Dr D.N. Singh, said in India the indigenous Integrated Circuits (IC) Design and Fabrication market was relatively unorganised and due to that foreign companies were gaining.

Indian companies were forced to buy intellectual property (IP) rights and patents developed by Indian engineers in India, but under the foreign companies at much higher rates. Thus, there was a loss of not only foreign exchange revenue, but also in terms of intellectual property (IP), he explained.

In his introductory remarks, workshop convener Prof P.J. George said the aim of the workshop was to give exposure to students, researchers and teachers in Haryana on the latest developments in the fast-changing area of micro-electronics, typically ASICs.

The Electronic Science Department Chairman of KU, Dr Anil Vohra, said routine organisation of such workshops would increase industry-institute interaction and bring the two entities together. It would also help students of electronics to seek better job placements.

In his concluding remarks, Dr K.S. Chari, Senior Director, Ministry of Communication and Information Technology, Government of India, New Delhi, who is also Chairman, IEEE ED/MTT India Chapter, stressed upon the need for generation of manpower in the highly specialised area of microelectronics.

He said there was an urgent need for increasing industry-academia interaction so that meaningful research could be done in universities and students could take part in live projects.

Among others who addressed the workshop were Dr Chandra Shekhar, Dr Raj Singh and Dr S.C. Bose of CEERI, Pilani, Ms Alpana Aggarwal of TIET, Patiala, Mr Amrik Singh of IKOS India, Mr Srikant Reddy of ST Microelectronics, Dr J.N. Roy and Dr H.S. Jatana of SCL and Mr Arvind Dixit of Advance Technology.

Besides industry people, the workshop was attended by more than 70 teachers and students from science and engineering colleges in Haryana.
