Work hit in PSUs, banks New Delhi, April 16 Operations in Central and state public sector undertakings and insurance companies were also affected as the all major trade unions supported the strike call.
“The response to the strike call has been substantial”, general secretary of the All-India Trade Union Congress (AITUC), Mr Gurudas Dasgupta, said. “We will intensify our agitation to get our demands fulfilled”, he said. According to the United Forum of Bank Unions, the strike was total and clearing operations were also affected due to the strike. A large number of bank employees held demonstrations in front of the Parliament branch office of the State Bank of India (SBI). The one-day strike will result in a loss of over Rs 100 crore to the national economy”, convener of UFBU (Delhi) V.K. Gupta had said yesterday. The bank employees are protesting against the policies of the government which, they feel, are an “attack” on job security, rights of workers, and non-recovery of bad loans. Mr Gupta said that the health of the banking industry was under threat due to mounting non-performing assets (NPAs), the current estimate of which is Rs 70,000 crore. If interest were added, it would be a mind-boggling figure, he said, adding that banks should initiate an effective recovery process. There should also be more options for pension, Mr Gupta said. Among the demands made by the union are recruitment of staff in all cadres — officers, clerks and subordinates — to ease the work pressure, reversal of the policy of downsizing, retrenchment and uncalled for closure of sick PSUs, attack on trade union rights etc. |
