CAREER QUERIES HOTLINE Q: I’m interested in a course in Psychiatric Nursing. Could you please suggest some recognised courses? Chetna Sharma A: The following institutes offer courses in Psychiatric Nursing: National Institute of Mental Health & Neuro Sciences (NIMHANS), PB No. 2900, Hosur Road, Bangalore 560029. Course: Diploma in Psychiatric Nursing. Eligibility: Registered nurse with 2-year work experience; should also possess ‘A’ Grade Certificate in General Nursing with Class XII, preferably in science stream. Course: MSc (Psychiatric Nursing). Duration: 2 years. Eligibility: Registered nurse with BSc/BSc (Hons) in Nursing with 60% agg and 2-yrs experience in Hospital Nursing Education, institution or Community Health setting. Central Institute of Psychiatry, Kanke, Ranchi 834006. Course: Diploma in Psychiatric Nursing. JOINING POLICE Q: I want to join the Police. Please tell me how to go about it? Rita Dhawan A: The first thing you need to do is to identify the branch and the level at which you seeking an entry. You could enter as Constable, Sub-Inspector or as an Asst. Superintendent of Police (ASP) with any of the Policing agencies — IPS, State Police, CBI, BSF, ITBP and even CRPF. The most important factor to keep in mind while joining any of these agencies is physical fitness. Selection Procedure The Physical Test is followed by an Interview. Meritorious candidates are sent for a 1-yr training programme. To enter as IPS officer, you need to clear the UPSC exam. For entry as Sub-Inspectors in BSF, ITBP, CRPF, CBI & CISF you have to take the exam conducted by the Staff Selection Commission (SSC). Although there is no specific reservation for women, separate merit lists are prepared for women at both Constables & Sub-Inspectors levels. During your training period as a SI you will study forensic science and law, as your job will involve a fair amount of investigation. On the other hand, the training for constables focuses on outdoor activities to strengthen their endurance since they have to do a lot of field work – patrolling and picket duty. IPS officers in their 2-yr training at the Police Academy are taught management, law, leadership and supervision, among other things. Irrespective of their ranks, all candidates are trained to tackle terrorists, swim, ride and drive. Growth Prospects: As per the rulebook, everyone starting at the Constable or SI level has to move at least two ranks during their tenure in the department. However stagnation is a common feature. An alternate method to get quick promotions is to take the various exams conducted by SSC or UPSC. BIO ENGG Q: What is biochemical engineering? Where is it taught? Chintan Gulati A: Biochemical engineering is concerned with biological changes and is particularly important in the production of pharmaceuticals, foodstuff and treatment of waste. It is a discipline that translates the knowledge of living organisms and systems to create safe and efficient processes. Though this is not a comprehensive listing but you can look at the following institutes: Harcourt Butler Technological Institute, Kanpur-208002 offers BTech in Biochemical Engineering. Selection is through UP State Engineering admission test. IIT, Delhi offers a 5-year integrated MTech in Biochemical Engineering. IIT, Kharagpur offers a 5-year integrated MTech in Biochemical Engineering. Admission to both the IITs is through IIT-JEE and the eligibility is 10+2 (PCM). ANALYST Q: What are the qualifications required to be a stock market analyst? I would like to work with credit rating agencies. I have done B Com. Radhika Bajaj A: Credit rating companies such as CRISIL or CARE generally take in CAs or MBAs from reputed B-schools. The work they do is not "stock market analysis" as such but analysis of different sectors of the economy and specific industries (which is used to arrive at the ratings). Research and analysis for debt securities/other financial instruments is another aspect of the work. You may opt for the CFA program offered by ICFAI which is equivalent to a Postgraduate Diploma in Financial Analysis. If you are a commerce graduate it would help as you have a background in finance, but engineers/science grads may also give the CFA a shot —only they will have to work harder. For details, log onto www.icfai.org or get in touch with their branch office at SCO 22-23 (First Fl), Sector 9-D, Madhya Marg, Chandigarh. Although the CFA course is very relevant, it is not as widely accepted in the industry as CA, hence placement is not guaranteed. But it’s a good add-on qualification. Also like the CA program, the number of students who manage to successfully complete the course are much fewer than those who enrol. THEATRE Q: I am passionate about a career in theatre. Please tell me about UG courses in dramatics. Harmeet Kaur A: There are quite a few courses you can choose from. B A (Hon) in Drama: Rabindra Bharti University, Emerald Bower Campus, 56/A, BT Road, Kolkata-700050, WB Sambalpur University, Jyoti Vihar, Sambalpur-768019, Orissa BA, (Dance & Drama) 5-yr: Bangalore University, Jnana Bharathi, Bangalore-560056, Karnataka BA (with Drama as a sub): Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar Marathwada University, Aurangabad-431004 (Mah) BA (Gen) with Dramatics & BA (Spl) in Dramatics: Shivaji University, Vidyanagar, Kolhapur-416004 (Mah) National School of Drama, Delhi and three other universities offer postgraduate courses in Dramatics. Besides these, there are theatre workshops and amateur productions conducted round the year. Do sign up for them if you have the time. IND. PSYCHOLOGY Q: I’m doing BA II with psychology as my main subject. After completing graduation, I’d like to go in for a professional course in psychology such as Industrial Psychology or Applied Psychology. Can you give me details of some of the leading institutions that offer these courses and the jobs one can get after doing such a course? Joginder Singh A: All organisations are confronted with the issues of growth, expansion, leadership, recruitment, staff productivity, motivation & training, role analysis, interpersonal communication, conflict resolution, performance evaluation — especially with global competition looming large. For several years, these issues were assigned to senior members of the management with assistance from the personnel department. But human beings are extremely sensitive and often governed by motives unknown even to them. An Industrial Psychologist concentrates on the human side of the organisation without compromising the management. S/he acts as a tactful negotiator — a humane, caring and patient bridge between the employers and employee. Best explained as the study of human behaviour as applied to industry, Industrial Psychology essentially remains an academic discipline in India. While technically speaking, it can play a significant role in the HR department of any industrial house, only a few large public and private sector industrial organisations hire industrial psychologists (TCS, Bayer, Crompton Greaves, Siemens, Mastek, Herdillia Chemicals, Air India). Industrial Psychology is generally offered as a specialisation in Applied Psychology at the postgraduate level. You need a postgraduate degree in the subject to qualify as an Industrial Psychologist. MA (Applied Psychology) is offered at the following universities: Annamalai University, PO Annamalai Nagar 608002. Avinashilingam Institute for Home Science & Higher Education for Women, Coimbatore 641043. Bharathiar University, Maruthamalai Road, Coimbatore 641046 MJP Rohilkhand University, Bareilly 243001. Purvanchal University, Jaunpur 222002. Rani Durgavati Vishwavidyalaya, Saraswati Vihar, Pachpedi, Jabalpur (MP) 482001. University of Chennai, Centenary Buildings Chepauk, Triplicane PO, Chennai 600005 University of Delhi, Delhi 110007 (this course is also available at South Campus) The subject is also covered under
