Makes veiled attack on Modi government

Ahmedabad, April 4
Prime Minister Atal Behari Vajpayee today made a veiled attack on the Narendra Modi Government for the unabated communal violence in Gujarat, saying it was high time the “political leadership and officials” took immediate steps to stop the killings.

Violence marks Malout poll
Clashing Akalis, Congressmen exchange brickbats
Malout, April 4
Several incidents of violence, scuffles and wordy duels marked the polling in the Assembly election here today. At least five persons, including a woman, have been admitted to the local Civil Hospital as they suffered minor injuries in election-related violence. There was free flow of liquor, mostly in the rural areas. In fact, there was more tension in the rural areas than in the town. The polling was near 60 per cent.

Coming down heavily on the Minister of Health and Family Welfare, who is president of the Post-Graduate Institute of Medical Education and Research, for passing an order which promoted “only private and not public interest”, Mr Justice Jawahar Lal Gupta and Mr Justice N.K. Sud of the Punjab and Haryana High Court today ordered the allocation of a chemist’s shop through open auction after holding that it was given away for a “paltry sum of approximately Rs 60,000 per month” even though Rs 2,90,000 was being offered.
